Hi, I have a 2003 25hp Mercury that the prop shaft doesn't hardly turn when shifted. This is what I've done so far:

1, I've looked at the shift linkage, and everything functions as it should.

2. I took the bearing carrier off expecting to see something, and it all looked really good. The clutch dog didn't look at all worn, and no metal to be found.

3. To rule out a spun hub on the propeller, I took it off completely and run it on muffs, and the shaft hardly moves.

The motor does shift on the handle. When running there is no sound from the clutch dog when shifted, which I find strange. When in neutral there is free movement from the prop shaft as there should be. Foward and reverse also go into gear(can't move the shaft by hand when shifted).

I'm in need of some ideas. I'm at a loss. I appreciate it. Thanks in advance!!

When did it last run OK for you ?----What happened the last time you had it out ?-----From 1051 miles away I would say there is an issue with driveshaft .

Hi, thanks for your time and reply. I bought this motor with this issue. I'm not sure of it's history. When I pulled the lower unit to look at the clutch dog I looked over the top end of the drive shaft. At that time I didn't look at the other end. I suppose that will be next.

Thanks for the replies. This is a tiller model. I'm not sure if the water pump was changed recently, since I just bought the motor. I'll remove the lower unit and look and inspect the driveshaft now.
