I have just bought one of these new motors my old 1989 johnson 150 blew the #3 piston they said do to water getting into the cylinder and into the crank. Dose anybody have any experience with this motor? Are they a good motor and does anybody know the difference in weight between the 2 motors because the 150 Yam looks alot bigger than the 150 Johnson.
Thanks
Mike

Hi,

I assume it is the ordinary 2-stroke 150 hp, carburators, that You have (not a HPDI, HPDI V-max, V-max, F150).

Weight:
Just check in your Owners Manual, it is here in PDF If You do not know where to look:
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/service/manuals/2003/lit-18626-04-94_399.pdf

Page 74-75 (Specification, 4-1)

You also have specifications for it at Yamaha US website, ordinary 2-stroke 150 hp, carburators, 2004 (I assume 2003 model is the same):

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/products/sub catspecs.asp?lid=5&lc=otb&cid=20&scid=9&but=34&year=2004&cat=Two+Stroke+Series&scat=High+Power

Start at 426 lbs/194 kg.

If it is good:
I do not know, but probably reliable. It has carburators and it is not CARB 2- or 3-star rated. Probably rather thirsty on fuel compared to the direct fuel injected 2-strokes that is available from Yamaha (HPDI) and other manufacturer. You can get some performance info here to give some indication how Your new outboard perform:
http://www.yamaha-motor.com/products/otb/perfbull/2StrokePerf_HPMidPort.htm

By the way what boat do You have? (always interesting to know)

I bought the new Yamaha 150 4 stroke which weighs 466 lbs. The 2 stroke HPDI is actually 10 lbs heavier at 476 lbs.

Kevin

Hi MikeKG
I have twin 150 HPDI's. One word of caution. The HPDI's do not produce many amps at idle. If the engine runs on low amps the plugs will foul. Either carry extra plugs or be prepared to clean on the water. Yamaha and others also highly recommends the use on ringfree.
I am currently having other problems with lubrication and have blown two powerheads in the last month. Yamaha thinks its in the oil but I'm not sure it's not in the electrical system.
Good luck.
Best Day Ever

Re: 2003 Yamaha 150

hello
I will stand by my caution of good luck.
the old battery trick is completely hogwash. its a lame blame game. I have a customer who finally put in a pair of group 27 1000 MCA batteries and still fouls plugs but I dared yamaha to even ask about batteries anymore. the engines just wont do what yammi says they will. my idea of ring free really is not worth printing here either. what conditions do you intend to run this engine in? the 150 HPDI is the least troublesome of all the HPDI's if that helps

good luck and keep posting
