Hi everyone

Hoping to get a bit of advice on repowering from Mercury Optimax 150hp to a 2003 Yamaha 200hp Vmax HPDI.

Reading through a lot of threads I'm still not sure whether this Vmax HPDI model has had the same problems with oil and plugs as the 225/250 HPDI's, it is not possible for me to inspect the motor at the time being, so I don't know if it has been updated with the 4 updates from Yamaha.

What are your other experiences with this motor - what are the cons & pros?

Thanks a lot guys.

You know it is hard to really tell what the problems actually are from motor to motor. Getting advice varies from whom you talk to. It's like people who try to discuss props and try to decide which prop is the best. They may try out this new prop and have better performance from weather conditions and think that their prop made all of the difference in the world. When the best prop is to stick with the manufacture's prop, the one that is R&D'd and had that taken into consideration for that particular product. The fact that everyone of the DFI's are good, it is just of matter of preference. Yamaha has a history of bullet proof electronics, however when it comes to the oil injection process they have decided to stick with their tride and true oil pump. Both the Optimax and Etec use solenoid oil injection. Another is fuel delivery. The HPDI can inject fuel close to 1025psi, the optimax a combination of air and fuel delivery of 90psi (depending on model), and the Etec uses a high pressure solenoid that can achieve pressures of 500-600psi. Now a salesman can try to sell you on all of the benefits of each product. But all of this means Jack Squat unless the engine is properly rigged. I like Yamaha the best, their HPDI is good, is it the best, probably not, is it the most reliable I would say yes. But here is the thing, the boating market is sketchy at best. Their is no certifications of standards other than really boating safety. The NNMA sets these standards along with the Coast Guard. So they may buy their fuel tanks from one manufacturer and switch the next week go to another company. Why is this fact important? As of right now most of all manufactures fuel pumps are on the engine. Auto manufacturers put their fuel pump in the fuel tank. What I am trying to get you to see is that boats draw vacuum, and cars push pressure. I know I am rambling a little bit but this is important. If you remember watching Bill Nye the science guy/Mr. Wizard, you probably saw the episode where he applied vacuum to water is a closed compartment and made it boil. Well this is essentially vapor lock or fuel restriction. All of these things need to be checked. So before you decide on which model remember that the engine is only as good as what it is pushing.

jeff jeff jeff.
but tha dang shovel down.
NONE of the 2.6L HPDI motors used the 1100 PSI system.
only the 3.3L HPDI did.
the 99 to 03 2.6L HPDI US market motors used a single injector driver.
had a few issues, not many.
not many updates on the 2003 200 HPDI.
best thing you can do is tell us what color the ign coil connectors are.
the 225,250 and 300 HPDI motors were a seperate breed.

Jeff, my question was not about whether the Yami is a better buy than my Merc, but more if this particular model was suffering from generel issues that I need to be aware of.

I don't see many 200 hp HPDI Vmax on the market, seems like boaters prefer the 225/250, and I was wandering if it's because it was a problem model.

The images are of the actual motor fully serviced with around 400 hours, price is around $5800, is that an OK price provided it is maintained as prescribed.

single driver EKU style plugs, other than its 7 years old they were decent engines as long as the maint is done either by hours OR by calander, whichever occurs FIRST just like the MAINT schedule says.

Hi Martin:

What year is your 150 Optimax?

I was actually looking at the same VMAX that you are asking about. I assume you have a 20" transom too.

I have a 1985 Grady 19' Tournament with the original 150 Merc Black Max (which actually still runs great), and I want to repower. I need the alternator (the "regulator" or whatever they call them barely puts out any amps and I have way too many electronic gadgets for the charging capacity of the old motor).

Have you had any major problems with your motor? If not and assuming it is post 2002, I would be interested. I am in CA but would obviously pay for shipping.

Thank you,

Scott
