I am the new owner of a pair of 225 yamaha 4 strokes 2003 models with 425 hours and have read a few threads with horror stories of corrosion problems inside the motors and exhaust ports. This has probably been beat to death, but since the motors are new to me I would like to know from some experienced owners or mechanics on this issue. The motors are well maintained and flushed every use religiously from previous owner. Are these isolated instances due to lack of maintenance or electrolysis or is this really a problem with this motor?

OdessaTim,

I am also new to boating and am considering purchasing a 2003 27' Cobia W/A that has twin Yamaha 225 with 458 hours. I have also heard horror stories. Are there any pearls of wisdom you can share with me?

Thanks

The exhaust tuner corrodes/ burns out from excessive idling. You can check next time you drop the lower unit. look up the mid section and you will be able to tell

Re: 2003 Yamaha 225 HP 4 Strokes Corrosion?

I am in the process of purchasing 2003 regulator w/225 yamaha 4 strokes w/300 hrs. from the original owner. I had heard of the exhaust corrosion problem, so i ask the owner if i could have it checked, he agreed, when the foot came off the engines, they both showed signs of corrosion, i told and showed the owner, he told the mechanic he would pay to have them repaired. today the motors were torn down, port engine was so bad it was close to failure, the starboard was bad also, but not as bad. My question is, if all these exhaust parts are replaced from powerhead down, will the new parts corrode the same as the original parts did? This is not a cheap fix, $3000 to $4000 per engine, I don't want to pay $70,000 for a boat and have to repower, Looking for advice, Thanks

Doubletrouble, you need to start your own thread as you,re highjacking someone elses and this is frowned upon here. There are rules about posting here to help all get the most out of the forums. I'm sure some would love to give you advice.......but not in someone elses thread. Also replying to old threads is not cool, so I' am no longer cool now
