Our motor is a 2003 Johnson2-stroke 90hp and it keeps sounding like it wants to start but won't. Should we put a new spark plug in it? It has been sitting for 1yr 10mo usually it always starts right up but this year it didn't. We are new to this sight and we love it so far. Thanks

if you scroll down a bit on the main page there is a section for evinrude/johnson only section. by fogged i mean was it winterized before it was put away for the winter. was gas stablizer used? if not get fresh gas, change the plugs, those are the easiest things to do.

No it was not winterized. Usually we do my husband is outside right now trying to start it. It's been started for a couple seconds and sputters alot and then shuts off but we are making progress thanks.

Re: 2003johnson keeps turning over

you probably have old gas in the carbs. they also may be varnished up, due to the gas evaporating. which means a carb cleaning, and rebuild kit. also check your spark.

are you trying to start this in the water? if not are you using muffs? if not then you should prob stop trying. i would get all the old gas out and get new plugs and try from there

Do you have spark? Do you have fuel? First two things to check.

Start there, let these fine folks here know what you find out, then we'll go from there.

Well the neighbor came down to help and we got it started but it was throwing out on my garage door some (oily ) oil, he put some starter fluid in and that seemed to keep it going for a minute but then it quit. There was gas by the carborator and all around it. It will start but then as it's running it's throwing this oil out. They don't want to keep running it because of the gas build up or puddling next to the carborator, in case it gets too hot and starts on fire. Yes we are starting this out of the water, and yes we have the muffs on,Even though it hasn't been started in over a year and the plugs look good do they still need to be replaced. Might be a stupid question but maybe someone else might need to know too. thanks.

We got the boat back after $850.00 needed a tune-up plus carb kit. Thanks for all your help. Will not ever forget the stabilizer again.

NEVER USE STARTING FLUID on a 2 stroke motor, use some premixed fuel. starting fluid is the easiest way to damage a 2 stroke.
