I'm working on a 2004 mercury 40 HP outboard with a sticky starter after starting, looking for a wiring schematic. Want to troubleshoot before just replacing parts. Cant find a drawing on-line.

Have a few manuals, just not for that year.

I assume it must be the solenoid or the ignition itself. looking for a test to figure out which.

Have you tried some light oil on the bendix? A sticking bendix will make it look like the starter is engaged.

Hook up a meter or test light to the positive wire on the starter and start the motor.

If the light stays on or the meter shows voltage after the motor starts, then move the light/meter to the wire on the solenoid from the switch and start the motor. If the light/meter shows voltage after starting, then look at the switch.

If the Bendix gear stays engaged and the engine is running there will be power at the positive cable since the starter is acting as a generator at that point. Pull the kill switch lanyard while it is acting up, if the starter keeps spinning you have an electrical issue- either the ignition switch or solenoid. If it doesn't then you have a problem with the Bendix gear on the starter .
