2004 40hp Mercury Spark Plugs Question???

WOW! $7 to $10 for a friggen spark plug! I can't believe the cost of these friggen spark plugs for a 2004, 40HP Merc outboard. <br /><br />My motor was acting like the plugs were fouled and sure enough I pulled them and they looked black and wet.<br /><br />The plug is an NGK BPZ8HN10 and no autoparts stores has them....<br /><br />I went to sparkplugs.com and found them and a cross refernce here: http://www.sparkplugs.com/results_cross.asp?pid=BPZ8HN10&crossManID=15&mfid=&seenCrossWarning=1 <br /><br /><br />Can I use the cross referenced champion or denso plug or would that be a mistake?

I have a 2001 Merc 60EO and need the same plugs. The fact is the Merc. really likes the expensive NGK plugs. I have used the cross referenced plugs in the past but, I went back to the NGK's. <br /><br />Be happy you only need 3 of them and not 6.<br /><br />Future Yamaha owner....<br /><br />CT

I went to Car Quest and they carried a wide selection of NGK's. Try them.<br /><br />If you don't have one near you, you might have to order online.

My plugs looked the same. I cleaned them well and re-gapped them. They work perfectly now. Unless the electrode is melted or deformed, it should still work at 1 year old.

i run either ngk b8hs , or b7hs in my 40 mercury and you will not be able to tell the difference. the b7hs is a little hotter plug, which helps with fouling. i've been running these plugs for a long time with no problems. 2.00 / plug

i feel your pain. my new 50 2 stroke uses 3 of them. would like a denso equiv but sounds like i need an NGK. they may last 100-150 hours with cleaning&gap as needed, so that seems tolerable.
