thanks for the help rick, i'm not sure if i'm using the link you sent properly. my serial is # OT672725. i read it as a 2003 model. i guess a 2004 boat could have been packaged with a 2003 motor as i was told from the previous owner that this is the original setup.

franger...it's quite common to have the previous yr power on the boat especially with I/O's or maybe the boat is a 2003, did you check the hull ID # on the transom?. Now if you got the serial number from the sticker thats on the starboard side of the swivel housing mine actually has the year on it.

hi boatin bob, i have hull id # QCU17103F304. can you get the year out of that? the paper ownership (not trailer) reads 2004.

Yep...the last 2 digits of the HIN (hull identification number) are your year so it's a 2004, you can usually see this stamped right into the fibreglass on the right side of most transoms. You should also have a serial number sticker on the right side of the swivel housing of the motor which should show the year. The year is not that important for Mercury as when you are ordering parts they always ask you the serial number to ensure you get the right ones.

many outboards are made the year before and are released as new models. for example, my 150 xr6 is a 2005 model, but it was manufactured in mid-late 2004.
