Hi, everyone i am new to this forum and have looked through many post but can not find anyone with a similar problem to mine. I have a low hours 3.0l mercruiser that has a pinging noise. The noise sounds similar to pinging caused by detination but timing is set correctly to 2atdc in service mode and advance seems to be advancing to full advance. Fuel is fresh and 93 octane. Carb has been rebuilt twice by a reputable shop with no results. This problem has been goin gon for three weeks and im fresh out of ideas. So far this is what i have done. The motor had a full tune up plugs wire cap rotor, new module for timing advance, new coil, fuel line has a filter and water seperator installed, exhuast has new valve to stop the water from coming back into the motor .... forgot the name of it right now... The noise is not from the outdrive and is coming from something in the engine bay. More info on the boat and motor are as follows, 2004 bayliner 175 mercruiser 3.0l Serial begins in OM the prop is orginal pitch and diameter.... As for the noise it started 7-8 uses ago and was speratic (SP) i heard it at 4k and figured it was due to lack of a tune up.. After the tune it problem still existed carb was rebuilt problem still present next the coil was replaced. Teh next trip i had no problems, then the problem re occured ..... next three trips included check of timing for an effect in the problem with no result, more or less advance does not effect the problem unless the rpm is dropped below 3800 due to sever timing retardation. Now the boat began to backfire after 2k in nuetral no load. The advance module was replaced and currently the boat still has the pinging noise and now backfires at WOT. The noise does not affect performance as the boat will still hit 40mph and max rpm but the noise sounds terrible and can not be ran above 3500rpm. The noise has become almost constant when ever rpm is over 3800 and backfireing occurs if punched to achieve WOT..... Does anyone have an idea what could be my problem??? If any more info is needed or an clarification is needed please let me know and thanks in advance for anyone who can help.

Intake leak can cause lean condition that can cause detonation.

You sure plug wires are in right position? I guess it should be. Maybe bent push rods?

the wires are in the correct position and firing order. The boat runs great under this rpm and has no power loss until it start backfiring. I have checked for intake leaks and found nothing. I have tried using like a fogging oil while its running to find a leak but i believe there are none. My only problem with a bend pushrod is then why does it run fine at idle to say 3600 rpm ??? And once in a while maybe 1 out of 20 i can punch her and she runs all the way to WOT with no pinging or backfiring .....

What grade of gasoline are you using.

I had an older 3.0 that pinged if I used 87 octane. try using a higher octane.

Have you checked/replaced the fuel filters? I think you have a fuel issue.

Ayuh,... Exactly,...
Could be the Tank, the Lines, the Fuel Pump, the Filters, or the Carb....
It's goin' Lean under high load causing the Detonation,+ Backfires...

fuel filters are new tank is all fresh 93 octane fuel from a good station..... boat is trailered so not marina fuel..... carb has been rebuilt ...... do you still think its fuel ? If so what should look at next

agreed....it's going lean under RPM load....check the plugs they should be light tan...white is lean...speckled spots is detonation....

fix it before you kill the engine...detonation will burn a hole in something...usually a piston...

if you have access to a live fuel pressure gauge check that you should carry 5psi at all times...anything less that that ccan cause fuel starvation...

lots of things....

if the fuel pressure is correct then it is in the carb...incorrectly set float and/or main jets not clean or incorrectly sized...

if the fuel pressure is not correctly then it can be the fuel pump, fuel filter, tank or line from tank to fuel filter...

there should be an intank filter (sock filter) and those can become plugged...blowing out the line can fix this but can rupture the filter...

the fuel pump is a manual pump and i do not recall a sock filter in the tank where is that one /.????

manual pumps go bad...it may work well enough to pull fuel down low but not near WOT...you may need an add-in inline gauge (any auto parts store has them)

sock filter would be inside the fuel tank if it has one....

Lots of good insight here as I'm having the same prob on my Evinrude and I have taken all of the above steps as well removal, dumping and cleaning of my fuel tank. Nice to see the glass filter with clear gas in it (old boat, new restoration).

Can I ask a related question here? Assuming the same problem; fuel starvation at high rpm....using an electric fuel pump can one tee into the fuel line and supplement the mechanical pump without creating any problems? That is to say, use both the mechanical fuel pump and the electric one at the same time, and/or perhaps including a switch to turn the electrical on or off at will?

sounds to me like youre timming is advanced too much under load, i would check timming under load in water.... good luck

timing is right on under both load and service mode and the distributor can be moved to nay position with no effect ......

yes you can....put the electric between the tank and that mechanical pump....make sure to use a regulator at the carb if the electric is over 5-6psi

Re: 2004 bayliner Mercruiser 3.0l pings above 3800 with backfire

Well i have an update i installed an new carb and an inline fuel pressure gauge and i have 5-6 psi constant under load at all rpms ... my pinging and backfires still remain ..... ....... i did notice today that the outdrive only lets water out the right side when facing the drive and more exhaust gas on the left. Is this normal when being ran on muffs??
