Hey all,

I bought this pickup with 88,000 miles on it seems to run fine and have plenty of power (gas milage isn't that great but didn't buy it for milage). the body is strait and pretty and all accessories work. It's the first newer pickup I've ever owned. I pull up in front of my house and first thing my neighbor says is "oh they suckered you in to one of those hemi's huh". when I asked what he meant he just replies "you'll see". Normally we get along great but this kinda pi$$ed on my parade.

Is there some big hemi engine defect secret I don't know about?

let me know what you think all

Wow....sorry to hear that people are picking on you!!!! What color is the truck? WHen the Hemi goes south it really depends on the trucks color ;)

Hey do the regular maintenance and you should be fine.

I'm no Hemi expert and other than that being an early one, i'm thinking you'll be just fine. My neighbor has had two and have other friends with them in Durango's with no problems. I'd love a nice Hemi if it had displacement on demand.

I own a 2004 1500 Ram with 5.7 hemi. 103k miles and zero issues. Forums on Dodge have no issues with this either. Best of luck with yours!!!!!

My last 2 trucks had/have hemi's in them. However, I traded the first with 30K+ and my current one has 35k. I do plan on keeping this one for a long while. I guess I haven't had any experience with their longevity "yet". Although, I haven't heard anything bad about them...... Congrats on your purchase!

The nice thing about them is they're plentiful. When something falls off, you only have to walk down the road a few hundred feet to find someone else's.

A buddy of mine added the k&n airflow set ups..I think back a few years ago it was 2-300 to add on the truck, but it increased his mileage..I remember we were cruizing down the turnpike doing 75mph and the computer was saying mpg was around 24..Which is way better then my 4.7l dodge v8

That will make them blow up even faster!

I love it when people think a K&N filter will actually improve mileage. The engine computer controls the amount of fuel based on the airflow. It has no idea what kind of filter is in front of it.

My '03 5.7 hemi on a 2500 4x4 still scares me when I step on it. Pulls anything I put behind it incl other brand pickups. Only problem so far is a cracked hose on the evap system that sets off the check engine light. Don't let the nay sayers take you away from leading the parade.

My '03 hemi (RAM 2500) broke a valve spring this year at 57K. That was expensive.

Wiper motor failed this year, too. The round plug on the motor harness has been replaced by a square plug on the replacement motor... which in turn required an $80. adapter to fit the square plug into the round hole. I loved that one!

As for the guy whose truck mileage increased to 24 mpg by adding a K&N kit? I call BS- I can make my computer show high mileage too by easing my foot off the acclerator when I'm traveling at highway speed. Take a look at the cumulative readout instead of the 'instantaneous' one- mine's at 10 mpg. My wife's RAV is really cool- take it up to 70 mph, lift my foot and the readout shoots to 99 mpg.

My .02

I think in general dodge puts out good looking vehicles, but my experience with higher mileage isn?t good enough for me to buy one and drive it past 50k or so. I?ve leased a couple knowing that they tend to fall apart, more so than the other 2 domestics. I think you?re rolling the dice on a truck that is made buy them, then add the hemi part and it is 50/50 at best. Great design but if you are looking for a 250K truck or vehicle I think they are #3 in my book. The price (new) reflects this too.

I'd agree that the exteriors are good looking and muscular but other than the past few years that got a badly needed update, the interiors are indescribably spartan, poorly designed, cheap materials and on and on. I really wanted to like the Durango when I needed a tow vehicle and couldn't swallow the interior. The new Durango however, seems to have made up a lot of ground.

JMO.....who cares what it looks like. Will it pull a greased string out of a fat hog's butt? :D

Take care of the truck, and it will take care of you.

Tickles me to hear all the bragging about a 'hemi'. Hemi is short for hemispherical, which refers to the design/shape of the head's combustion chamber. Maybe with some machine work, you could have a 'hemi' four-banger! Wouldn't that be a kicker....

Well said. I put a K&N on my old Avalanche. It made no difference so I talked my buddy into buying a new paper filter and a case of beer for a trade!

For some reason this grinds me too. People say "HEMI" because it sounds cool. They have no idea what it means. Heck "Shovel Head" Harley's were "HEMI" and did that make them fast?

Now, congrats on the new truck. They are really nice looking rigs. Like others have said, take care of it and it will take care of you.

Re: 2004 dodge 5.7 L hemi good pickup or no

thanks guys I feel a bit better about it now. I couldn't get them to throw in the service package because my credit wasn't good enough to include it in the financing package :(
but the dealer gave me the maintenance llist and 2 years of oil changes as a private deal. I don't really tow alot of weight ( small boat, couple of ATV's) but I love having a pickup that my kids don't ask me to park 2 blocks away to pick them up in. One of the clenchers of the deal was the back seat(quad cab) my boy is a bit of a stretch 16 y/o 6' 3" already and he is comfortable back there. I'm short and fat but his mom comes from giants
