I need to change the oil filter on my 2004 Johnson 115 4-stroke. I can see that it's burried under the exhaust manifold and the manual says "see dealer". I really don't want to take it in for a $200-300 bill just for replacing a $10 part. Any suggestions or secrets for do-it-yourselfers?

Sure -- remove the side panel for access.

When you say "side panel" do you mean the lower engine houseing? That's the only panel I can think of. Thanks, I'm still new to this engine...

Ok, I got home last night to take a look at it and it looks like the side panel must be the lower engine cover. It has six screws that need to be taken out in order to pull the cover and get to the filter. Now if I can figure out how to get those, factory installed, screws out! I may just take it into the shop, I don't want to bugger up the screw heads or bust anything loose.

Ok, got it fixed now. The philips head screws are also hex heads so the socket wrench took care of it. The filter is easy to remove once the cover has been taken off.
