2004 Johnson 8 horse no spark and flooding

Geez, bad enough the big boats down, put the inflatable in yesterday and had to get towed in! I've stored this motor in the corner of my living room for the 2 off season's I've owned it. Looks in great shape, was winterized. Anyways, my question......<br /><br />I did run the motor for about 2 minutes max on my batch of gas that I winterized with (lots of oil in it) Put fresh gas/proper mix in yesterday, and broke down. Took the plugs out and rough sanded them, still sounds like no spark. Also, if it was flooded-I notice when I pull the choke out gas appears around the mid section of the carb. I'll assume there's a top and bottom half. If a carb's flooded does gas leak out somewhere? Sigh, easy rebuild? Any links for that?<br /><br />I'm debating on just getting 2 plugs at lunch or just dropping it off somewhere to have carb looked at, depending on when they can look at it.<br /><br />And no, I don't have a manual for this one yet. Gave the Evinrude ones away when I sold that and ordered Mercruiser's. Looks like I'm taking the afternoon off. Dealer said 3 weeks to rebuild a carb., but he said to swing by and he'd take a "quick look" at where I tried to describe the gas was leaking from. I need plugs anyways, and they may have the carb kit, if that's what he recomends. <br /><br />I just searched this site for manuals, I don't want Seloc or Clymers. I believe it was outboardwizard or something I bought my Evinrude OEM manual from, link no longer works. Who sells the OEM for a 8 horse 2004 Johnson?<br /><br />Thanks

Pulled the plugs out at the dealer yesterday, a little gas dripped out of them, plus I tried to point to where it was leaking gas. He was reluctant to push the carb kit on me, his thoughts were it was just flooded. His advice was to leave the plugs out and let it "dry". I guess when a carb/engine "floods" gas has to go somewhere? May be my fault for just idling it Monday. If it starts this time I'll open it up. Maybe the oil in there or whatever made it "stick". Maybe I'll get lucky and it will "unstick" (2 yr old motor-shouldn't need rebuild already). If not, still want to find source for OEM manual...<br /><br />Thanks

Mike,<br /><br />Check your carb float adjustment. Should be approximately level. If it is badly out of adjustment, or if the carb float is sticking, it could cause flooding.<br /><br />Also check your carb float needle valve and seat. If the needle is sticking, it could also cause flooding.<br /><br />Gas should not leak out of the carb throat.<br /><br />Lastly, get a spark tester and check your spark for each cylinder. Should be blue and able to jump approximately 1/2".<br /><br />If you've got spark and gas, I'm going to assume you have compression since the motor is pretty new. Then it's just a matter of getting the carb adjusted properly and you should be good to go.<br /><br />Check everything and let us know what you find. I'm sure with the help of this board you can get it running in no time.<br /><br />Happy Boating!<br />Kev

Kev,<br /><br />Thanks for the reply.<br /><br />Maybe I got lucky last night, put 2 new plugs in, it started, was idling rough and trying to stall. After running it for an hour and a half in my 55 gallon drum-it's all better. Ran the heck out of it, in and out of gear, high rpms to idle, by the time it was done it was close to running how it ran last fall. Luck is not usually on my side, but this is a new engine, so I was hoping maybe something was just stuck in there. Will find out more this weekend as the big boat goes in tomorrow and I NEED the dingy/motor for mooring runs. Keeping my fingers crossed. Looking in the owners guide there's a gas screen/filter I can clean as well. Next weeks project. Still need source for OEM manual. Have a great weekend!

Could be you had some bad gas. Did you add fuel stabilizer before winterizing? Once you ran out all the bad gas, the motor would run better. Were you running fresh gas yesterday?<br /><br />Or could be you had a some debris in your carb and managed to blow it out. Sounds like a good idea to clean that gas screen/filter.<br /><br />Any chance the old plugs were fouled from the high-oil winterizing mix? Maybe the new clean plugs did the trick.<br /><br />In any case, congrats on the motor!<br />Kev
