So acquired a 2004 mercruiser 3.0 with approx 500 hours on engine. I changed the plugs and oil and the thing runs like a top. I went to change the fuel filter but am uncertain how to proceed to be honest. I know it has never had it done as the original black factory paint was till bonded to the bottom screw under the bulb when I turned it. It broke off as well as some twist tie type metal wire. It began to leak fuel after I back'ed off bolt so I tightened it back up and here I am. It's EXTREMELY difficult to get to so figured I devise a better plan before proceeding.
questions - will the fuel stop leaking after the bulb is removed? Is that the only place the fuel is coming from? What is the twisty tie that broke off? is that required to go back on after filter replaced? Finally, would I be better off spending my time installing a water/fuel separator somewhere up higher and more accessible for future maintenance? Is that possible or is that fuel filter attached directly to the fuel pump? Any advise in that area would be appreciated.
thanks in advance.
