2004 Yamaha F60 Starting Troubles

Hello. I would really appreciate some help in troubleshooting a problem with my motor. As stated above it is a 2004 F60 Jet motor and it won't turn over. It sounds like it isn't getting fuel or something. Last weekend I took it out to the river and we got it to start and run for a good while, but it wasn't running real good. After we took it out of the water we noticed that the we had spark plug caps connected in the wrong order (we had them lined up top down, and this isn't the correct configuration). We didn't get a chance to get it back on the water after we fixed that, so we took it out this weekend and it wouldn't start at all.

When I turn the key it sounds like it wants to start and then nothing. Or every once in a while I will get it to turn over briefly, then it just sputters out and dies. The choke doesn't work either. The motor doesn't have many hours on it at all, so I don't know what the heck to do. I'm guessing that we damaged something last weekend by having the firing order of the spark plugs all screwed up. Some of my buddies think that it is a problem with the fuel pump, so I am thinking of replacing that. Is this a hard thing to do for a rookie? I would really like to try to get it fixed because it is right at the beginning of King Salmon season and I've got the fish fever. The dealer can't get 'er in until the 20th, but I'm hoping to have it up and running before then. Any knowledge you could share would be greatly appreciated.

the 04 F60 is a carbed motor with prime start.
DO NOT use any throttle for cold start.
first thing is to pull and inspect the plugs for rust.
wrong fireing order can cause water injestion.
second is to test compression and spark.
do a forum search for homade spark tester
if compression and spark check out ok double check the plug wire arrangement. the two coils fire simultaneously.meaning 1&4 fire together then 2&3
now we are off to the carbs, unless you have the correct equipment they can be impossible to resync.
however they are rather simple.

Thanks much for the response, Rodbolt. I took out the spark plugs and there was no rust, they were just really black. Looked like a whole bunch of carbon or something on there. I should also mention that I gave it a couple squirts of some starter fluid and it turned right over, but when that wore off it just sputtered and died.

I checked for spark today and discovered that I am not getting a spark from the two caps coming from the top coil. Unless you have another suggestion, I guess I'm going to try and replace the ignition coil assembly and see if that works. Thanks.

my suggestion is two fold, if your going to do it yourself speak the language,
big big difference between not cranking and failing to start.
second would be to check the voltage on the coil primaries, voltage on the secondaries and figgue out is it ign coil or pulser coil.
and you have to watch waste spark systems, a bad plug can take both out.

no worries, but you always must remember, we too are at terminals.
if you say its not cranking but mean it wont start thats what I have to go by,
if you say it thats all I can hear
carefully test the inputs and outputs to each system before replacing parts
