Found this motor on CL for $2000. Bought and sold a lot of boats and motors so I know the basics but never looked at a Merc or anything with oil injection. I am wanting a 4 stroke or oil injected motor to cut down on the smoke when idling and trolling. The boat is a 1971 18 ft Starcraft. Im reading about the 2+2 set up and I'm on the fence here.

Are all 4 cyl ELPTO units 2+2?

Is this a bad idea? I want something quick enough(30-40mph) to chase the birds looking for Sandies with 4 adults and 3 kids or drop a few lines off the back and just troll along.

Do these things suck at idle? Its an old aluminum boat I don't want a motor that's going to rattle the teeth out of my head while trolling.

Are these motors pron to "loading up" when trolling?

Thanks for the help

Unless its been abused this motor should work for you. however, its probably not gonna be a smooth idle, the old 2 stroke just don't do that well and they are usually fussy to start when cold. Nevertheless, I wouldn't trade my 90 elpto for anything. you didn't say how big the boat is, that will make a difference. :)

18 ft alum Starcraft

Turned out to be scam asked the guy for the serial number so I could look up parts and an address and phone #. He gave me the serial number and asked where I lived. Thought that was weird so I googled just the serial number and it came back as a 6 month old eBay listing that closed at $6k. He was using all the same pics for the ad also.

really pissed off and bummed out.

I thought it looked suspicious.

Since you want smooth and quiet you should consider a 4 stroke of some kind. I see lots of deals advertised for Suzuki repower 4 stroke. If you get something old and 2 stroke you should be prepared to tinker with it. Nothing wrong with that, that's what I do. The 4 stroke will be computerized etc and will not lend itself to shadetree mechanics like me but it would be nice smooth, no smoke, low fuel use, lots of good thing.
