2005 5.7 mercruiser

I am endeavering to start working on my own boat and have the following questions. Any support is appreciated.
What is the solenoid and reset button next to the caburator?
Where is the nuetral safety switch located? 2005 234 tahoe.
What is the little bugar next to the bilge pump directly under the engine?
Is there another solenoid for the starter other than the one on it?
General starter wire connections: There are alot of wires that go to the starter. I am used to a main power and one to activate the solenoid, but there is another one on the solenoid also. I think it sends power to somewhere else or maybe is a secondary needing power also, maybe from one of the above items. But when I had the starter out I am pretty sure I tested it with just the one solenoid connection.
How can I turn the engine over manually. It says it is a left handed motor, so if I turn the bolt on the crankshaft pulley will it just losen and if not could I brake the bolt with to much force. I have already losened the bolt and tried it the other way with a breaker bar.

Someone will be along shortly to suggest you post pics in support of your questions. It not only makes the answers more accurate, but it also serves to further educate the noobs like me that don't have a clue.

I'm tuning in for more info because I have an older 5.7 and some of these part descriptions sound familiar.

The solenoid by carb is a slave solenoid for the one located on starter. The reset button is a 50amp main circut breaker, first thing to check if all electrical power is lost. Neutral saftey switch is in the control box. Only one connection (besides battery cables) is needed to test starter. Left hand refers to looking at flywheel end of engine facing forward, therefore you would be tightening damper bolt; that is standard rotation. Remove the spark plugs before you turn it manually.

What is the little bugar next to the bilge pump directly under the engine?

dose it look like a big hockey puck? in my boat it is a transducer for the depth gauge.

thankyou. I have enough to keep me busy for hours now. The little bugar was the float for auto bilge. If anyone knows also; when removing the bilge It seems to go right into the harness and there is nowhere to disconnect it without a cut and splice?

There are better ways to turn the engine over. You can usually put a pry bar between two bolt heads on the pulley - any pulley will do.

Take the time to download the appropriate manual for your engine and drive by going to the top of the page and looking at the "adults only" sticky.

well, as the story goes: the last time I used the boat was last November. I go 3 miles out in the gulf make 2 dives and go home, flush the boat, litely spray the engine/compartment and there it sat till now. The boat has been used very little. last august had complete service including oil change. Oil looks very good but engine does not turn over. I have not forced nothing yet.

As in - the starter does nothing when you turn the key? Or as in, there is a big "clunk" like it may be locked up?

the starter clicks once, not too clunky, then after an hour or more it might do a little click again

I did have the starter completely and proffesionally rebuit and checked and I have the main shaft pulley off now

I didn't mean to remove anything. Take out the spark plugs as mentioned. Then the engine should turn easier. In fact, you can try the starter again once the plugs are out.

But what I meant was, with all the pulleys still attached, and the belt tight, you can sometimes turn the water pump pulley for instance - by using a long screw driver or other flat bar between the bolt heads.

I have had all the plugs out and tried turning the engine with a breaker bar on the main pulley nut. I am at the point now of getting a little more aggresive

How did the plugs look when you removed them? Rusty?

What outdrive to you have? It can easily be the outdrive that is locked up instead of the engine. You might pull the outdrive and see.

The plugs were black not rusty at all. That is what I was wondering. I thought that if it was in neutral or drive the propeller would just spin.
