bummer on your luck.

Have the dealer give you a printout of the motor history. The printout will be very detailed. Chech out th efollowin link to see what you should get. http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/ETEC_EngineHistoryReport.html

It will have codes for any overheating, show time at various temperature, and show minutes run at various RPM, etc.

You may see if it had problems during the first 3 years, and if you had to dealer during that time. You got something to use for argument with evinrude.

I have a 84 60HP evinruide, and a 2006 evinrude ETEC 90HP. Both run great, but I need to keep my fingers crossed. Anybody can have bad luck.

in your first post you mentioned that the motor overheated.
and also you tell us that it didnt get enough water so you lowered the engine.

i dont know how hot the motor got when you overheated it or how many times, but the circlip might have been compromised deu to extreme temps, broke of and gave way to the wristpin to slide out of its position damaging the cylinderwall.
ive seen locating pins fall out and damage the walls.
is it deu to overheating is hard to say and prove, but to say it just fell out after 3 seasons of running with an motor mounted wrong and overheated there fore etecs are bad motors,
doesnt sound right to me.

Sounds like you have done some adjustments with the height of the engine during your ownership of it. Cavitation problems may be caused by the engine being mounted too high. Pontoon boats have an engine mount pod that angles/directs water to the lower unit when at speed. It is important to insure that the antiventilation plate is even with water flow from under the engine pod for proper traction and cooling-even at high trim angles. All four of the water intake holes must be under water at any trim angle. Pontoons don't respond to trim like normal boats, the engine just raises and the bow does not, so the lower unit could come up high enough to expose the top water hole on the intake. Cupped props tend to hold in elevated mounting ventilating situations where the lower unit is not deep enough in the water-and you may not know it without a water pressure gauge. You did not mention any max rpm at full throttle with various mounting heights. It is also important that the engine have the correct prop pitch so that the engine runs at the top of the "normal" operating rpm. If the engine ran it's whole life at the bottom end of the "normal" range, it could be considered lugging and that generates heat. If you ever get a few burrs on the prop from hitting objects, these burrs can cause the prop to cavitate, esp. if it is mounted too high to begin with.

im leaning towards the mounting height and the proper pitch of prop for the proper operating rpm.

i say print out a the engine histroy report from the dealer so u know whats wrong so we also diognose a possible reason y a wrist pin would pop out
