Hey! I have a few questions about a new boat I just got.

The toggle switches on the helm are not labelled, I am wondering if anyone knows specfically what they do? or do they change from model to model? I have a 19 sport.

Secondly, you can see some gunk on the connections on the fuse panel on the back of the helm(picture attached) what is the best way to clean those?

One switch works the horn, another works the livewell pump. there is a toggle switch that has both an up and down position, which I assume is for nav lights. the little lights on the switch light up but the nav lights done come on.(i have in stalled new bulbs)

Any help is appreciated, as with some advise I think i can fix this myself , instead of payin someone to do it!

thanks in advance!!

Ayuh,.... Get a multimeter or test light, 'n see what's got power, 'n what don't...
Then TRY the switches to see what they go to, or follow the wires...

It looks like spray grease used to stop corrosion,... Try a rag if you wish...

Again, use a Multimeter, or Test Light...
A circuit needs Power, 'n a Ground path to work,... Check both sides...

A couple of switches are generally labeled AUX (auxiliary). Those switches may or may not have anythjinig wired to them since they are added so the owner can add whatever accessories they want and not have to llook for a switch that matches those already there. Look at the back of the panel. The switch may have a wire going into it, but nothing coming out or it may have a short length of wire with a butt splice on it but nothing on the other end. If that's the case, the switch is a spare. Determine what accessories youhave on the boat and then determine which of those doesn't work. Problems are rarely the switch and most of the time simply bad wiring, blown fuses or the device itself is bad -- especially if it is a motor driven device. Bad grounds are generally at the top of the list of failures.

Re: 2005 Proline wiring questions...

thats for the support guys!

I have been looking all day, and you are correct. the last two switches on the right are blank. I see what you mean, i could connect a flat butt connector with a wire, and power something off that switch.

Heres where Im at, and dont know what to do next. (i do have a multi meter, just not exactly sure what setting to use for what test)

First switch from the left, put the switch on, it does NOT light up. it has a dark brown and black wire, the bilge pump has the same two wires coming off it, and it does not turn on. Is there an inline fuse somewhere? or is it safe to assume the bilge pump is fried?

Second switch is the livewell, and it works fine.

Not sure yet about the third switch, but it does light up when I put it on.

Fourth switch is my nav lights, you can put it in the up or down position, either way only the bottom light on the switch comes on, and only the rear nav light on the boat works. I have traced the light grey with blue strip wire, and all seems ok, so not sure why there is no front nav lights?

Fifth switch is the horn, and it honks just fine.

If anyone can give me some ideas on the bilge pump switch and the front nav lights, its GREATLY appreciated.

I also attached a picture of the rear fuse panel(incase i need to check something there

That's not a fuse panel, those are just buss bars and the main breaker. Post some pictures of your panel switches front and back.

Ayuh,... Set it to read 12v when it sees it....
Hook the black lead to a known solid Ground...
Then TEST what yer workin' on....

Does the bow light get Power,..?? does it have a solid Ground,..??

Do a web search on How to use a multimeter,,,
It will answer all the questions yer askin', that We can't....

Not being mean but if you really don't know how to use the basic tools, you should take it to someone that does.

While that is probably sound advice, a multi-tester is not rocket science but you cannot become an expert with it, or even use it for basic diagnostic work unless you learn how to use it. We aren't here for that. There are plenty of sources for that. But look at this basic diagram so you at least understand what a basic light circuit looks like. Follow the arrows. You use the positive probe of the meter to poke along the route starting at the beginning of the circuit and working downstream. When you lose 12 volts you found the problem.

Re: 2005 Proline wiring questions...

Supersportster, Like you I'm no expert, but I have done a ton of this kind of work to my last three boats. I have a bad habbit of buying used boats, cleaning them up and using them for a season or two and then starting over. My wife is ready to shoot me! Anyway, I had a hard time with the multimeter and found it difficult to understand so, I went to my local auto parts store and bought a small LED light. I extended the leads on it to about 3 feet each. When I'm chasing down wires and trying to see what is what, I simply touch or twist the leads from the LED light to the wire in question. If the light comes on, presto, I know it works. FYI, I usually remove all wiring from a used boat (excluding wiring for the outboard) and replace it with new wire. I have found that used boats will end up with multiptle splices and all sorts of fire/shock hazards and its just faster and safer to start with new wire (and plumbing). The light may seem elementary and simplistic, but it works and it cost $5.

Re: 2005 Proline wiring questions...

Slow ride, i appreciate the idea!

It was actually what i was somewhat doing the last couple days. I jsut got my tester light out and starting to see where I had power.

And the end end of yesterday I noticed that Two of my toggle switches would not illuminate when i was switching them on. I switched switches with two blank accessiory switches I have, and BingO! the switch illuminates and the accessory hooked to it works!

After the fact I really wish I figured that out earlier! lol

I did give up on my nav/anchor on/off /on switch for today. I suspect i am just not hooking up the wires correctly, to get it to function properly

My old 3 way swtch would light up in the down positon , and the rear nav light would come on. It wuld not light up in the up position, and the front nav lights/ dash lights would not come on. I put the put power directly to the connector for the rear nav light andit works, i then put power to the bundled connector, which tunred out to be the front nav lights and insturment lights, and they came right on.

My old switch was a carling, and i could only find a sea dogg switch at my local store, which appears to be the same. I re connectd the wires on the new swtich exactly the same as they were connected to the old one, and the switch lights up in both the up and down position, but again, only my rear nav light will come on.

Is it possible the wires connect to different spots on the sea dogg 3 way connector, or that I purchased the wrong one?

Thanks for any help getting me through this, I am almost there!

Re: 2005 Proline wiring questions...

I know my posts my not have made sense, or contained some dumb questions, but I am down to one last question:

My last problem is wiring up my nav and anchor switch.

I attached a picture of the back of the switch before I removed it to replace it. I of course installed it with all the wires in the same place and it does not work properly. I am not sure if my new switch(sea dogg) is different from my old one(carling)

You can see the grey and white wire piggy back to the orange, is for the rear nav light. The light grey with blue strip is the front nav lights, and the blue is dash lights.

When I put power to each line, the lights its for light up. I believe I just have to install the wires on the switch properly.

Attached is a link to the switch I bought, with shows what its terminals are for:L

Re: 2005 Proline wiring questions...

If your switch is part number 420218 then it needs to be wired like below. The terminal in the upper right corner of YOUR NEW SWITCH is the ground connection for the internal light. Ground it. The feed for your gauge lights should be connected to the NAV terminal. There is no need to have those on while you at anchor. As shown in the diagram, there needs to be a jumper between the two 12 volt terminals and another as shown in the the diaram.

Silvertip!! you are an electrial genious!!

LOL...I thank you so much for the help! I dont know how you make those perfect diagrams, but with the attached great explanations, I have solved all electrical issues!!

I also did the annoying task of running my gps/fishfinder wires up the the center console!

I really do appreciate you help, as this is the first time I tinkered with boat electronics...in hind sight, it was not that big of a deal, but now i have a much better understanding, and should be able to diagonse/repairs issues alot easier!!

againg thanks ALOT!!

Uncle Willie will likely disagree with you on the "electrical genius" bit.
