Okay I just picked up a 2005 model Yamaha 8hp 2 stroke with 2 hours on it for $660!! The manual says 100:1 oil after the break in, where you're supposed to use 25:1. My question is do you have to use their oil to run it at 100:1 or can you use any TCW-3 oil? I usually use Penzoil fully syn. Is this okay at 100:1 in this motor. Also, running it a 25:1 it smokes like a freight train. This is normal?? Has anyone broken in one of these motors before? Thanks for your help.

I'd only run 100:1 in a low RPM kicker. I'd use Yamalube 2M, but that's me. Otherwise I'd think 50:1 with any valid 2-stroke outboard oil is fine. If there is warranty left, be safe and use Yamalube 2M. It's not like you're going to go through gallons of oil in an 8Hp in a year. $660, What a steal!

Thanks Willy. I'll use the Yamalube. I've just got so much of the other stuff around... you know. I found it on Craig's list, I couldn't believe it when I saw it. Somebody with more money than sense. :)

My dad had a 1989 Yamaha 15Hp 2 stroke. It called for 100:1 also. We ran it on a 14 foot aluminum. We used a normal 2 stroke oil but mixed it about 80-90:1. ( just to be a little on the safe side) It worked great till 2004. Then someone stole it. The motor always started great and never had any carbon or plug fouling. It was very reliable.

Thanks for the reply SS. I always tend to "over oil" slightly as well, just to be safe. I hope your dad's motor blew up in the thieves faces on the first run.

Yeah, One could only hope.

I always wondered about the whole 100:1 thing myself. Yamaha seems to be the only company that suggests to run their newer motors at 100:1.

My Dad's always ran great on a leaner mix. I always wonder if other brands could run at 100:1. My new motor has a VRO so I don't have to worry about mixing. But I know it uses alot less than 50:1. I do do alot of trolling, that may be the reason. This year I want to keep track of how much gas and oil I use to see what the average ratio is.
