So I got a brand new 2006 johnson 15 hp 2 stroke on craigslist. It had been sitting in storage, never run for 3 years.
We ran it slow with a heavy mix (25or 30:1) of oil/gas for the first tank full to break it in. I'd guess it has no more than 20 hours on it now.
My buddy was running it the other day and it just up and quit, he was at half speed transiting from the mooring field. nothing spectacular.
He put new spark plugs in and didnt get very far.
I check for spark with the plugs in the cylinders using a third plug to be sure it had compression when I did it. It has observable compression in both cylinders, it's not spitting gas out the carb so I assume the reed valves are working.
I pulled the carb and disassembled to inspect and cleaned it as i went with carb cleaner and an air compressor. I pulled the fuel pump and all looks good there. I pumped fuel up to the carb with the squeeze bulb and no clogs.
I poured gas thru the carb with a tube essentially bipassing the carb and no start.
If I give the engine full throttle and pull start, you can feel it catching and see a little smoke as if there was some ignition.

Unless someone on here has any ideas, I can only assume the CDI sensor has come loose or is defective under the flywheel throwing the timing off.

I mean a motor with spark and gas should run...
Any thoughts?

check your compression with a tester, fingers are not accurate testers. could have shear the crank/flywheel woodruff key, throwing timing off.

PULLING FLYWHEEL

you need a harmonic balancer puller, you need 3 - #8 harden bolts, that fit the 3 holes in your flywheel. standard hardware store bolts will strip out, causing more problems. loosen the flywheel nut, leaving it on so it protects the thread. thread the bolts in 7/16 of an inch. then tighten the puller, adjust so it has a straight pull. now tighten the puller, rap the center bolt with a hammer, then tighten some more. you may have to let it sit over nite, and repeat in the morning. this is a compression fitting, it will eventually POP!!. do not loose the woodruff key that goes in the groove of the flywheel and the crank shaft. then installing the flywheel, it has to be totally clean, no oil, woodruff key in place. then torque the nut to the specifications for your particular motor. if you do not do this, the woodruff key with shear, and you will be repeating these steps.
