Hello everyone this is my first post.

First I took the boat out the other day put it in the lake it started up no problems. I ran it around for a while the RPM gauge was all over the place. I stopped and checked it out. Everything seemed ok but when I tried to restart it, it stalls when I put it into gear. It did it a few times and stopped it would start up no problem. I thought I was just tired from sitting all winter.

I took it out again yesterday. It started up right away with no problems. We got about 100 yards from the dock and it stalls. It would not stay started in idle or gear. When it would come on it only stays on for s short time and stalls out. It is only keeping around 500 rpm when it normally is about 650. I am new to boating and could you some help. I am very mechanically inclined and would like to fix it my self.

It's a 2006 carrevelle with a 4.3L merc paired with a. Alpha one drive. It has ran fine prior to this incident.

Thanks Justin

Hi there, welcome to iboats!:)

You'll want to remove the fuel filter and inspect the contents looking for debris, water or varnish as you may have a partially clogged carburetor...Could be the inlet filter or internally clogged.

When you say the RPM gauge is all over the place, do you mean the actual engine speed RPM or the gauge is acting sporadically electrical wise?

The RPM gauge was going back and forth from 0-6000, it seemed like it had some electrical issues. Not sure if it's related to the stalling. The engine was not reving along with the RPm movements.

Then there's a possibility that your tachometer is starting to short out internally causing the engine to die.

As a test, disconnect the gray wire either at the back of the tachometer gauge or at the - side of the coil. There should be two gray wires at the coil...Leave the one connected that goes to the ignition control module mounted to the exhaust. The other should go into the main wire harness to the dash.

Also check the rear of the gauge for a dial with maybe an arrow that you can turn. Give it a few turns back and forth coming back to the number of cylinders of the engine or the number it's at now if it's been correct in the past. Be sure it kind of pops out when you re-set it to your cylinder number. See if the gauge works normal again. Also like an old TV, give the gauge a tap on the lens to see if it helps too.

I'm assuming your engine is carbureted?

Yes it's a carb motor. It's an 2006 mer cruiser. It starts up fine but when i warms up that seems to be when it starts to rough idle and stall.
