2006 50 hp merc 4 stroke question

What is the silver box for on the back of my outboard? It's about 2" square, and has two water lines and two fuel lines going to it. One water line goes directly to the water pump indicator hole, for the water stream that shows your pump is working? The water is not passing through this little box.

s/n 1C008170, no photo, why would the fuel pump have water lines to it?

To help cool the Fuel Vapor Separator tank assembly which houses the fuel pump inturn helping to avoid fuel vapor lock issues due to excessive heat. Sounds like you're describing item number 5 within the parts link of the Fuel Vapor Separator system.

Serial number 1C008170 comes up as an 2006 MERCURY 4 STROKE EFI CHINA 50EFI ELPT 4 Model number 1A51412FZ.

so I'm looking at the fuel pump with a fuel cooler built in? I would assume that the water should flow right through without resistance???? No water is flowing through so could it simply be plugged? Just blow a bit of air through, and all is well??
