I just bought this engine this afternoon from a fella that had it since 07 and used it only twice max 6 hours on the engine....The engine is cherry and still smells new....he started it up for me in one pull and ran it max 1 minute....I get home and started reading the owners manual and the manual indicates that the flush port on the engine should be used to flush the engine without the motor on????.......**** the guy used the fkush port and ran the engine to show me.....Did I toast the water pump? and what would you do now?

more than likely, you should install a new pump, good luck.

welcome to the contraversy, first yamaha said it was ok, then not ok, then ok and I think the latest not ok again, odds are in your favour though as it really doesnt take much water to lube and cool the impeller.
now your down to 2 choices, run it as is and watch it or tear it down nd replace it.

Put it in a barrel of water and see if it still pumps. I have the same motor, except mine is and '07. Your gonna love that little motor. Good luck, Junky...

Re: 2006 6hp Yamaha 4stroke

Thanks for the reply guys.

So basically if i put the engine in a barrel of water and run it and the pump, pumps I should be Ok....right?. I also read that if the engine starts to overheat a warning light will come on or blink??

Will let you know what happens, but man i would expect Yamaha to at least put a warning sticker by the flush port warning people about this....I am new to outboards and this my first one. I have a 26' foot Striper and only bought the engine to use it on my aliuminium for lake and California Delta fishing.

Again thanks for the help guys!!!

Just immerse the lower unit in water and start the motor. Make sure it is deep enough to cover the water intake. If water "pees" out the hole, you should be good to go. It should be a nice steady stream. Good luck, Junky................

After starting the motor and running it for a few minutes test the pee water with your hands to ensure it is not too hot, if you cant hold your hand in the water because it is too hot, then it is best you put a new pump kit in, when runnig this test, carfully place your hand on the head, watch those moving parts, if you can keep your hand on the head for more than a few minutes without being burnt, then all is well.

Tested the engine yesterday and all went well. Ran it for 30 minutes and the pisser water was warm and could hold my hand under it with no problems and the head was also ok....time to take it out in the lake and see how the motor performs.....thanks for the help guys...hopefully i can pass it along someday.
