Dual purpose questions for my merc colleagues. I have a repeat patient in my sick-bay, a fairly well maintained 4 stroke 9.9hp merc that appears to have great difficulty with regular gas. (~10% booze) I'm now on it's third carb kit and second fuel pump in 3 years. Not Merc's fault they put hard liquor in cheap gas, but telling folks they must buy the most expensive gas on earth is tricky at best.
I'm inclined to believe this motor is prone to such issues, owing to possibly not being the greatest design and should no longer argue with my client that there's still value holding onto this problematic creature. There is value in it, only it may be in making it run well, which it will for a time until the carb gets fouled or fuel pump internals melt again, and sell it to somebody happy to dole out an extra 40 cents a litre for alcohol free premium. Even then this motor tends to be hard starting on premium, at least according to my client, who is the guy I have to convince to hang onto it.
I'm beginning to wonder though, if I'm trading my hard earned reputation for something that might repeatedly bite me on the transom. Are these "early" early 4 stroke mercs as problematic when run on today's increasingly booze soaked fuels as I am beginning to suspect?
Thanks for your considered replies. If my post even hints at OMC snobbishness, please accept my sincere apologies. No such criticism is intended.
