Help me out guys. I have a 2006 evinrude 60 horse etec outboard on a pontoon. Died on me idling Keeps blowing the 10 amp fuse that’s on top of the motor every time I turn the key on. Trim will work until fuse pops and it will crank for a second then blow it. Anyone have this problem before? If I unplug the middle harness on the emm it does not blow the fuse and will crank over.2C23D7B4-C790-4478-8F15-986DD8460FBE.jpeg

suggest you consult with the folks on the ETEC user board in the i2 section

the fuse feeds theT&T switches and the front key.. the key loops B+ back to the EMM on purple via J1B pin #10 ( middle EMM plug) ... saddly.... blowing fusues are known to blow due to the EMM going south :-(

First, is the amperage of the fuse correct? I would have expected a 15A fuse.
Secondly, the fused power from the ign switch powers the tachometer, trim gauge, fuel gauge, gauge lights, PTT and other etec engine control stuff. I would look for melted wires in the wiring harness, at the motor and under the dashboard. Your harness should have all the wires for the stuff I listed, maybe some wires are shorting together?

the fused power only feeds the T&T relays with very little amp draw... removing the middle EMM connector J1B as been known to confirm a defective EMM .... (the fuse only stops blowing with all accessories still connected indicating that the amp draw is mainly the EMM . If recall correctly the problem lies with the EMM "internal" charging circuitry)

EMM are subject to blowing due to poor /loose battery connections .

* red -white at the bottom of the picture has black goo on it....what is it ??

10 amps is the rated fused

I have a 2014 E-TEC 115 that was blowing 10A main fuses with any trailering (key in or out) or any rough waves. I’d know because I’d instantly lose power trim and the voltage and fuel gauges would die but the motor kept running. If I turned off the motor, I couldn’t restart without replacing the fuse.

Tech couldn’t find any issues and consulted BRP. They surmised that it could be a power trim relay because when trailering with the key out that would be one of the few “live” circuits. Tech thought it was a long shot, I authorized it ($180 plus another 1/2 hour labor). It didn’t fix the issue.

I always had a hunch it was a short coming from somewhere ahead of the motor. The last time it happened, I manipulated all of the wires in the harnesses under the cockpit and into the throttle assembly. I also checked all connections into the key module. I did find one loose connector (light blue wire connected with a round quick connect) and crimped it.

No problems since.

If I have time I’ll try and report on exactly which wire it was. I’ve since taped all sharp sheet metal near the wiring harnesses as it very well could have been an exposed wire shorting.

When I first researched all of this in the forums, my heart sank because it seemed to be a $2000+ EMM replacement.

Good luck
