Does it even exist? Can't find much on it. If so is it a 2 or 4 stroke? I'm getting one this weekend but I can't find anything about it.

Are you sure its not a 2004 cuz in 2006 they went to a 10hp. Should b a 2 stroke but it will tell ya when you get it somewhere on the motor.

If you understand the model code, there will be a 4 about midway in the code. Or when you get it, pop the cowling & if you can see a oil filler plug on the engine, it is a 4 stroke.

He should tell me. I'd be ok with a 2006 9.9 too lol. But he actually said, all were bought brand new between 2004 and 2007, so I gues I'm either getting an older 8 hp, or a newer 9.9. Are the 9.9s 4 stroke?

From what I understand they quit making the 2 stroke 9.9s about 2005, but still sold what was in inventory up into 2007. The 4 strokes had the same basic OMC type lower units, but with Suzuki powerheads. Some info says the 4 strokes (both 8 & 9.9hp) came out about 1999, & ran parallel with the 2 strokes for a while.

If I'm wrong, hope some of those mechanics that were working for dealers at that time chime in to correct me.

Ok so I did get it this morning. I had a selection of about 15 motors. I picked the american (candian, I think but you know what I mean) built motor with the best paint. I think it is a 2004, still haven't checked it. It is a 2 stroke. Anyway he gave us the motor, and a full tank of gas. We drove to our boat took off the inflatable, and dropped it on the transom. It started as soon as i figured out I had to pump some gas. It ran as I drove it around the marina, and to a bridge close by, then back to the dock. I then drove it to a big area of open water and was just about to let it rip when it bogged down and shut off- three times. The wind was a good 20-25 mph today too, so I had to paddle diagonal to a random dock. I killed it, sat for a few minutes and it started right up. I took it back to the dock and then left, got some bait and fished. It died on the way back but the wind blew me right back anyway. It bogged down one more time but I tried pumping the gas and I think it worked. Is that the problem? Or like a bad fuel pump? Also I was backing it up hard to try and get on the other side of our stuck anchor (very hard when there's wind pushing the other way) and smoke started coming out of the pee hole. I knew it was bad so I killed it. Then I started it again and it worked. I brought it home and in the trash can it worked, but it didn't pee the first time I started it. Also, what is the knob on the end of the throttle? It seemed to make the throttle response quicker. And finally what is the knob with a hole in it on the tiller before the throttle.

Oh and the cavitation was horrible, I couldn't get it on plane for more than 5 seconds all day with out it revving real loud and all that. It's pretty annoying.
