Hi all. I have a 2006 Kayot v220 5.0l engine that puts out 260hp stock with a red line of 5000 RPM. I can run WOT at 4500 RPM at 42 mph (gps) with 4 passingers, gear and a full tank of gas. My prop is "J 14.5X19P". What prop(s) should I get to for max fuel economy and speed? I dont need a good hole shot and I dont mind buying multiple props if they fit a need for the type of boating I will be doing. We also like to idle around the bays do I need/want another prop for those ocasions?

Thanks

Jones

I couldn't find any Kayot specifications like dry weight etc. Also I guessed Mercruiser drive.
First of all a boat that is setup well any improvement would likely be measured in tenths or less if any improvement at all.
At wot your 260 will use about 26 gph Whether on a fast runabout or a houseboat.Mileage is accomplished by producing the most speed for a given throttle setting.Prop selection can help this. If your trying for the best mpg a flow meter should be your first purchase.
I believe some will even give you your mpg without having to calculate.
Your present wot slip is about 15% probably reasonable considering the size/weight of your boat and load.
A stainless prop should give the best across the board performance. What one is best would depend on how the boat reacts to the prop. Unless someone has experience with a boat exactly like yours prop selection for particular activities will be trial and error.
And again any improvement over a good setup will be minor.
You need to find a dealer that will let you try props to find the best one(s)for your activities.
Usually requires a deposit and final purchase.
If you read the stickys at the top of the prop forum and the helps on the prop store page
it may help you understand prop selection better.
You say you don't care about hole shot but if hole shot is too slow you are wasting fuel.
Very basically a 3 blade prop will give good overall performance,A 4 blade will improve low to midrange performance.
Typically seem smoother, have better hole shot, stay on plane better at reduced throttle handle better at speed and around the dock. They will sacrifice some top end.Less or more blades seem to be best for very specific applications.
With a flow meter and some careful experimentation you will quickly learn what trim, weight placement and throttle setting produce the best mpg.

Steelespike had good information that I would follow. I have the same motor in my Tahoe 216WT which weights approximately (appx.) 350 pounds more or less than yours and I get 4600 - 4800 RPM's wide open throttle (WOT) with the factory "black max" 19 pitch aluminum prop.; depending upon the load in the boat that is. I switched to a 17 pitch 3 blade stainless prop. because I wanted a better hole shot for wakeboarding and other water sports. Depending upon the load now (passengers, gear, fuel, etc.) along with conditions (outside temp., humidity, water conditions, etc.) I get a WOT in appx. the same range. I have tried several different props. and settled on a basic Mercury Vengeance prop. which works well for me and my boat. Maybe someone here on iboats has better information for you.

With a WOT rpm of 4500, I'd think that your current prop is border line lugging the motor, since you are 100 rpm below the bottom of the WOT rpm range(4600-5000).

Any lower pitch might lessen your MPG, but your motor will appreciate not being lugged. Any higher pitch will drop your rpm to the point of destroying your motor.

If it was my boat, I would put an 18" pitch prop on it(gain 150-200 rpm) to get out of the lugging the motor range. You get the best mpg by properly propping the boat to operate within the motor's recommended rpm range. :)

As suggested a marine engine should be allowed to rev freely within its rpm range.
While the tach does indicate he is below the 4600 suggested for the low end that is with 4 adults full gas and gear.
It surely makes rpm with a light load. I don't think the motor would be affected with the difference.
No doubt less pitch will help rpm, hole shot and water sports but may slow the speed a bit.

Helpful info: Harris Kayot V220; length is 22' 4"; beam is 8' 6"; has a 19 degree dead rise; dry weight is 3860 lbs; carries 43 gal of gas. Uses Mercruiser or Volvo Penta.

That is a load and the dead rise probably makes it struggle out of the hole and limits top speed.
Maybe that 18" prop is a good idea.

Since the 18" pitch aluminum props available are of the old round eared design, I'm changing my recommendation to the Solas 15.5 X 17 pitch prop. That size is available in aluminum (Amita) and stainless steel(Rubex).

Frankly, the Amita aluminum will perform about as well, at a fraction of the cost. :)
