I've got the manual.....anyone been thru the valve adjustment procedure?
I used to adjust solid lifter valves in my motorcycles [air cooled and very important] and an old Ford Y block V8, so I understand the basics.....just have not touched a bolt on the powerhead of my Mercury.
I hear what sounds like it could be a too large lash/gap in the 3 cylinder 40 4 stroke and it's bothering me.....not sure if the initial valve adjustment was ever done as I bought this rig used a couple years ago.
Trying to decide between doing myself and taking to the shop. The mechanic in the local Merc shop said not to worry about checking the valves.....that they rarely need adjustment. This makes me want to do it myself !!!

I have 2010 30 hp 4 stoke and that's what they told me. They said they never had to adjust the valve
on 4 strokes.

Makes me wonder if they just don't want to because it's a hassle, or too risky if a valve nut comes loose afterwards, or an exhaust valve burns after an 'adjustment' [set too tight, liability, etc].
I'm afraid when cold weather comes I'm gonna get the manual out and do it........too curious and want to insure they are correctly set.

Yeah, paid $80 for it. Then discovered it can be had for FREE on line : (
It makes it look fairly easy in the manual but I wondered about it and thought I'd see if anyone had done it.
At full throttle I hear what sounds like either a piston slapping or a too loose valve/rocker arm. The manual says to check the valve lash so I can't seem to 'leave it alone'. Guess I'll find out. My dealer's mechanic seemed to not want to do it or at least made it sound unnecessary. The manual says otherwise. Guess an inquiry email to MERCURY corporation might be a good idea.
