Hello, I am having issue with my starter not cranking. Ran great all summer.... last weekend stopped motor to drift a bit and when I went to re-start I turned key on all systems energize, alarm/fuel pump. and when I turn the key to crank the starter I only hear a click at the starter relay. I have replaced the starter, replaced the starter relay and clean and re attached all grounds. I am stumped so far....any help will be appreciated
PS I cant find a wiring diagram for this boat. jg

Ayuh,..... Sounds like alittle diagnosin' coulda saved ya abuncha money,.....

Test for power at the tiny terminal, closest to the block on the starter's solenoid, when ya hear the click at the relay, probably a yellow/ red wire,....
If no power, check the relay's output wire,..??

If you jumper from the battery wire on the starter's solenoid to the tiny terminal closest the block, does the starter engage,..??

Is the battery's voltage above 12v,..?? 12.5 is good, 12v not so much,....
Did ya clean the (+) cables, 'n connections,..??

Will add
check the power on the Red/Purple wire at the key. Turn key to start and does in drop?

If it doesn't drop, do same on Purple and the Yellow/Red wires

Thanks for the quick reply Bondo
  • Yes I did jump a wire from the battery stud (on the Starter) to the small stud closest to the block and the starter cranks perfectly.
  • my voltage at the ignition switch 12.04v and at the Relay box is 12.5v
  • Yes I cleaned my battery cables and all ground connections
  • I also jumpered a wire from they relay connections #30 and 87 and the starter cranks

Will add

Thanks for the response alldodge!!!
power at the ignition switch red/purple 12.04v when turned to start 12.00v
there are 2 purple wires
1st purple key on 11.96v no change when key turned to start
2nd purple key on 11.98v down to 4.0v when turned to start
yellow/red key on -.25v up to 11.97v when turned to start

HELP!

12.7V is full charge, 12.05V is 50% charged
The motor cranks when jumper is used so Bat has enough power, the issue is there is corrosion between motor and Key. The 4V reading is a big issue. Start with checking the motor 10 pin connector and and key switch

Thanks Alldodge! I will check all wire connections on the purple wires from the key to the nine pin connector and get back.

Hi. I occasionally have the exact same issue with my identical merc version of this engine. Been too lazy to fix it and only happens rarely. But it’s the fault of the wee relays on top of the engine near ecu (on mine). When I give it a tap…all is well. Reminded me to get mine sorted, reading this. Is this the relay you replaced ?
