How much soot is acceptable? When running with the exhaust out the straight pipes I get a lot of soot all around the back of the boat. Its a real pain to get off. Is there something that needs to be adjusted to stop this? Also what do you use to clean the soot? I have been using simple green does an ok job but finding it harder and harder to get off each time. The engine has 52 hours on it. No modifications either.

A side question is there any reason other than the soot that I shouldn't run the engine through the straight pipes for extended periods of time? Does it hurt it in any way?

I would wax the hull, it gets the soot off easier.

Also, at WOT, there should be no soot, so run at WOT.

Good idea on the wax. the WOT works as well. Funny story I got this boat from an older gentleman that loved to smoke go fast boats he told me stories of he and his 90lb gray haired wife sitting meek and mild until a boat went by......lol. I asked him once what he thought was a good cruising speed. His reply, how would I know it was either sitting idle or WOT. lol
