Will do. I was thinking I had this thing solved. :(

I'll inspect the regulator tomorrow. I have no clue how to check rail pressure though.

I checked my rail pressure yesterday with a fuel injection guage set up I had previously purchased at the local parts store. super simple, screw it on to the little valve on the rail. Looks like a valve stem for a car.

I know you feel about having the problem solved, even though changing the fuel pressure regulator alleviated the high pressure/ overheat situation on my pump, I still have a problem with loss of power and backfiring. We're thinking that whatever was clogging the regulator screen has also clogged an injector(s). I have sent out my injectors to be cleaned and tested and they will back today, hopefully this will be it.

I picked up this pressure pressure gauge from Autozone for $45: http://www.actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16174

Operating instructions are here: http://www.actron.com/publish/2004/06/07/pdf_english_16174.pdf

Just got my injectors delivered, results show that the injector filters "were very dirty". I'll be installing them this afternoon for a test drive.

Good luck.

I ended up dropping mine off with a different mechanic today. The one I talked about earlier in the thread said to just run it til it quit, or he would replace pump in the Winter. I wasnt happy with that advice, so I took it to this guy who is a friend of a friend and Volvo "certified" or whatever for more than 20 years. He says he will inspect the fuel system in its entirety and get to the bottom of the matter.

I could have kept at it and eventually probably succeeded in fixing this, but it's beginning to consume ALL of my off time from work. I'm going to let him deal with it and try to enjoy my weekend.

I gave him my old fuel pump as well for $200. Depending on what he finds, I may not even owe anything.

I will report back with results.

FWIW I still had exhaust riser hose plugged and second hose run over side of the boat today. Getting it from my marina, to the ramp, and waiting my turn at ramp involved about a half hour of idling. No whine during this with hose over the side.

Here is another reason to check fuel pressure and fuel pressure regulator.

I had heard on this forum or another that there was a Volvo service bulletin related to the fuel pressure regulator. I didn't know the details until I researched it today.

i did some research to locate the clip you mentioned for purchase. several sites have the clip however it shows up for many models except for mine which is the 2008 5.0GXi-G. Odd that it shows the clip in the image and parts lists for several other models including some 5.7 engines. perhaps its not relevant in the G version?
