Bought a new to me 236 ssx and on the opposite site of the ladder lid, there is another lid with a storage compartment. It has a drain that drains outside, but it is really always full of water as the outside drain is typically below the water line. Is it for beverages? Or what?

It is for 'what'. . . What ever you want to store there. Often it will be used for the stern anchor, since they are small. Will beverages really fit in there. How much Ice do you think it will hold?

If it has a notch in the lid, that is for the tow rope. You can leave the tow rope connected to the eye, and throw it in there for a quick getaway.

Not for a ladder as it is quite deep compared to the ladder side (7 inches) and doesn't have the cutouts for the ladder. It also doesn't have the notch in the lid for a rope. I guess you can store anything you want in there that you don't mind getting wet. The rear anchor would make sense, but it isn't nearly big enough to hold a decent anchor, as it is only about 18 inches square. Guess I will leave it empty until I throw some ice and beverages in it. It has the only drain that actually goes outside the boat. Every other drain hits the bilge, including all the swim platform popup cleats that also leak into the bilge. I hate wet bilges, but the design has a low floor compared to water level so, I guess no other option. I may have bought something else, had I really investigated the details.

We toss our wet tow rope and gloves in there. The rope stays all summer and the gloves come out to dry. Ours drains overboard not into the bilge but ours is an SSi not an SSx.

Its a cooler that's why it has a drain. And it doesn't fill with water as the water will only fill the tube to the same level as outside of the boat. I have two of them on mine one in the bow and another in the walk through at the stern.
