i just bought a 2009 mercury 50hp 2 stroke that was purchased and started once in 2009 at bass pro shops and has sat vertical on its pallet since then. i still have to buy controls for this motor but was wondering if there's anything i should do before trying to start it? will the impeller still be good since it wasnt used? im hoping the carbs aren't clogged since it was started that one time. any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Impeller probably has a set after 5 years and replacement wouldn't hurt. Carb condition depends on whether or not fuel was left in it. I'd get a can of aerosol Sea Foam, pull the plugs and squirt a reasonable amount in the cylinders. Then crank and while doing so, squirt some more in the carbs with the throttle at max open. It may start on Sea Foam which it can do and is ok. On the first run up, I'd bite the bullet and premix fuel and oil at 50:1 fuel to oil in a tank till you know that the oil pump works. Put it on muffs and light it off looking for the pee stream on the Starboard side and feeling the block after running for a few minutes. After you know the pump works by watching the oil level in the built in tank then you can just run gas in the tank. While on double oil it probably will smoke somewhat.

That's what I'd do.
