I am in the process of purchasing a used Astro fish n ski. It has a 200hp, Evinrude 1993 model, 21 pitch viper prop. The boat is 19.5 foot.
Can anyone give some advice on things I should look for on this motor before purchasing the boat.
I know my old trusty 78 model Evinrude 85 hp has been bullet proof and I want the same reliability on the big V-6. Is this possible with this motor?
Thanks in advance for any advice given.

The first thing you need to do is go for a ride in it, take the whole famdamly! Just as you would normaly use it! Dont buy it with out a water test on the lake or river. The next thing would be a compression test, there should be no more than a 10% variation in compression. Pull the lower unit plug out enough to see that there is no water in there and the oil looks new. Get all the maintenance records the guy has available from him. If its been more than two years between waterpumps you need a new one. Also the same for the fuel pump although they last longer!

After you buy it change everything that moves over to a full synthetic oil of your choice and install new plugs.

Make sure the power trimm works good up and down smoothly.

These are a nice boat, I almost bought one but it was too far away!

Others may have more information.

Thanks for the advice. I was told the motor has been rebuilt. What compression should it have?

Hello Sivart,
Don't know what boat you're looking at, but i have a 1991 20 foot astro FSX fish and ski with a 92 johnson 200 gt on it. If you are looking at the same thing pretty much, don't expect it to be any kind of speed demon or anything. I top out at 55mph. Not a very fast hull. Make sure to look in the ski locker at the underside of the floor and make sure that there is no rot under there. Also mach sure the transom doesn't have any flex. I like the boat, jsut wish it were a bit faster than it is. On the compression readings, the numbers themselves are not as important as the fact that they are all basically within 5 to 10% of each other. I think my compression numbers on mine are all 108# to 112#. Feel free to ask any questions about the boat or setup since it seems i have about the same rig you are looking at. Steve

Wrestler20,
The guy must be lying to me. He claimed this boat will run out at around 70 mph. It has a 21 pitch Viper prop. I really did not know if this was possible with this size boat.
The transom seems to be in good shape, (no stress cracks in the paint)I was worried about the reliability of the motor the most. I will check the areas you metioned. Thanks

Thats a great motor, good choice. With a 21" prop turning 6550 rpm and 0% slip you will have a theoretical speed of about 71. I doubt the 0% slip deal. At 12% youre in the mid to low 60's. Thats if youre turning the motor 6500+ rpm.

Just an FYI thing.

Re: 200hp, 93 Evinrude

Exactly as Dhadley posted, the math doesn't even work out with a 21 pitch prop. I am turning about 5600/5700 rpm. I know the quickfire was a little faster than mine, but i think realistically with two people, gas, and gear you should expect closer to 60, maybe a bit more. Who knows though, take it out on the water and give it a shot. I haven't seen any fish and ski's hit 70mph though. They may be out there, but not too common. There is a link if you use the search button up top, type in prop slip calculator and see what you can find. Good luck and let us know how it all works out.
Steve

Re: 200hp, 93 Evinrude

Thanks to the both of you. I am not new to boating but I am new to the larger (higher HP motors) My old 85 hp V4 is almost bullet proof now the boat its on is a different story. Which is why I am purchasing a New( to me ) set up. Two more questions. This Boat (motor) does not have an automatic oiler on it. It may have been removed but I do know it does not have one. What is a good mix ratio for the gas & Oil. On my old 85 it is 50:1 mixture. Is the water pump a difficult job?

50:1 is right. Use a good oil. Use 87 fresh octane fuel and Champion plugs. Prop it out with an average load to 6000.

The water pump job is exactly like your 85 only the shift is easier to get to (remove the port pan -- very very easy).

You'll love the motor and will be amazed at the torque it makes.

Good luck!

Nothing fancy with that motor, just as bullet proof as your 85 and very reliable. If you take care of it with regular maintenance, it will last a lot of years.
Stalker

Re: 200hp, 93 Evinrude

Everyone that replied. The motor is actually a 92 model. As you all said it runs out good around 62 to 64 mph. It has 2 speedometers on it and I am just splitting the difference. It is a big change from the old 85 hp V-4 thats for sure. I still need to put a water pump in it but I love the boat-motor combo. It works well together. That motor is a torque monster.

Re: 200hp, 93 Evinrude

glad to here you like it. So what rpm are you turning with that viper prop? I saw you're earlier post and you will sure want to look into getting a water pressure gauge. Sounds like we have about the same set-up because mine is a 92 200 johnson gt which was the same as the xp 200 for that year. You will like the motor, not exactly a fuel miser though. I had mine out this weekend and ran to 61.7mph gps. That is about the best mine can do. What oil are you running through it? Whatever you do, don't ask for oil recommendations on this board :) Next thing you know, your post will have about 50 replies and you will be more confused than ever. Good luck with you're new boat.
Steve

Re: 200hp, 93 Evinrude

Wrestler20,
I am turning around 6000 rpm but I ran out of lake. I had more trim and speed to go. The lake is very small that I had it on but I have not been able to take a trip yet. The boat is nice and the motor is great. Before I dropped the motor down to its lowest setting I had it up to 64 to 69 mph. I dont know which it has 2 speedometers on it. One on the fish finder (wheel type) and one on the dash. It is certainly fast enough for me! So far it has not been as bad on gas as my old 85hp v-4 and I have been running it pretty hard. I am impressed. The prop is a 14-3/4 x 21 Viper. It does come out of the hole quick!

Re: 200hp, 93 Evinrude

I forgot to add. I am running the Pennzoil synthetic. Not because I think its best but just because its what I used in my old boat.
As far as the pressure gage. Did you add one to your motor or did it come with it?

Re: 200hp, 93 Evinrude

Sounds like you're turning the right rpms if you're at 6k. The boat had a water pressure gauge when i got it, but it was "T'd" into the overboard indicator which is the wrong place on our motors, so i had to fix it. I run a 20 pitch raker on mine for tubing and skiing and it doesn't matter how many ropes or people are back there, it still yanks them out of the water. I would imagine that 21 viper is probably about the same for hole shot. The penzoil synthetic is what i'm running now too. I was running the ficht ram oil, but the penzoil actually seems to smoke a little less and costs a bit less too. I havn't heard too many negatives about it, so that was the way i decided to go also. Pay close attention to what dhadley has to say about your motor, he has given me and a ton of other people on this board quite a wealth of information. good luck,
Steve
