200HP V-6 Merc Crank Hub search

Hey HI alll:

I am overhauling my '84 2.4litre and I needed to heat the hub on the "top" end of the crank in order to get it off....
Needless to say, I was not too worried about destroying the trigger assembly under it. (as I was going to replace it anyway)....but stupid me, I forgot that there is a rubber ring with a "steel sleeve" fused onto the hub just under the flange that accepts the flywheel mounting bolts. I ruined it,,,but the hub came off OK....
I have been to several shops in my area and I have not been able to get a part number for it and I have not even seen a diagram anywhere that illustrates this part.
I am almost positive that this "trigger pickup ring" (?) is fused directly to the hub so I imagine that all I need is a new HUB for my crank and I'm all set...
But for the love of (insert preferred deity here) I cannot find a listing for one.

Can someone PLEASE shed some light on where I can find a definitive part description of what I'll get if I order a new Hub for my crank...and where the heck I can get it from?? (Merc dealer cannot find it on their old mocrofiches, or their parts books.)

Thanks in advance!

By the way... The flywheel hub is not supposed to be heated to remove it... use a flywheel puller. You may have killed the magnets for the trigger ring. Which part are you after?

Or is it on this drawing?

Re: 200HP V-6 Merc Crank Hub search

Thanks for trying...honestly...
But the crankshaft hub is not shown on any of those diagrams (as I mentioned) and that is my problem...

Of course I killed the Magnets on the trigger ring...I killed the ring itself...
hence...the need for a new one...heh heh...

Soooo....After breaking the proper insert-type puller I borrowed from a local machine shop, I had no choice but to use a regular flywheel puller and some heat. I removed the flywheel and stator and then I deliberately destroyed the trigger assembly in order to access the end cap bolts so I could disassemble the engine without having to remove the hub from the crankshaft. I then ***-U-MEd that the ring that is fused onto the underside of the hub would be available from my Merc dealer, I proceeded to heat the hub (destroying the ring in the process) and it came off without too much effort.

If anyone has information leading to the whereabouts of this missing "Crankshaft Hub-Trigger Ring" assembly, please contact me ASAP. (heh heh)
Thanks again to all who participate in these forums...

I think I now understand what you are after... It's part of the flywheel... Order a new flywheel and you get the 'hub' with it....

Chris.......

If you heated it enough to destroy the trigger, you also destroyed the magnets in the hub that drive the trigger. Excess heat causes magnets to lose their domain alignment (magnetism) It's new flywheel time.

hope it helps

Re: 200HP V-6 Merc Crank Hub search

I actually cut the trigger assembly out with side-snips...heh heh...and I not only de-fielded the magnets in the ring...I cut that away as well....(in order to heat the hub quickly to avoid transferring a lot of heat to the crankshaft) as the rubber makes for an excellent insulator against a focused flame from a torch...
But..alas...you guys seem to be in agreement that the hub comes as a flywheel assembly part (which I am quite shocked to hear, being an automotive mechanic for 30 years...). I was trying to be "smart" about ensuring the new-ish stator and the flywheel were removed prior to this procedure so I would not damage them and I was CERTAIN that I could purchase the Trigger Signal Ring either by itself or at least as part of the "Hub"....

....bummer....rats.....crap.....etc....

Time to go looking through the scap bins....

...did I mention I was bummed....:p

Anyway....thanks all for your help...I'll probably need it again before this motor goes together again, so until then....My Regards.

I am beginning to see exactly what happened... I was confused by your mention of a rubber insulator.. Having never disassembled the hub/trigger magnets I wasn't aware that there was any rubber in there... Never really need to look.

I know the puller you were using, and I don't like them... I just remove a couple of the hub bolts, measure and drill a piece of 10mm plate and use a couple of longer, high tensile bolts into the hub... Turn the forcing screw and the flywheel just pops off :D

Having destroyed the hub/trigger magnets... I'm sorry, you need a new flywheel.... Hub is NOT available separately.. (unless you find one in a scrap bin :D)
