Hello - looking for tips/suggestions -
Engine worked great at start of season- about a month ago was crossing the ski area on a busy weekend, hit some large wakes and the engine started to loose power, then died after coughing and sputtering. After 20 minutes of panic-troubleshooting, was able to get the engine to start, and had no further issues that day.
Used the boat one week later: no issues.
Used the boat two weeks ago and the engine quit after crossing the ski area (much calmer waters)- after trying multiple times I was able to get it started but it ran rough. An hour later I headed back to the marina and it gave me fits until I moved all passengers to the front of the boat (pontoon) to level her out - it seemed to like that and we ran hard to the Marina.
I pulled the boat out of the water, drained the gas from the full tank , using the fuel port the motor pulls fuel from. I replaced the fuel sender gasket, the high and low pressure fuel filters, and filled the tank with fresh fuel. Re-launched boat and tested with no issues.
Last week, took boat out with no issues: first use, after re-launching with new fuel.
Today , after cresting a large wake, the engine began to lose power and ultimately stalled. I ended up getting towed back to port and was not able to start the motor again, but I did not spend the usual time troubleshooting.
The engine starts fine when leaving port and gives no hint of trouble: when the issue starts, the motor acts like it's fuel starved. The cure, thus far, seems to be waiting for 20 minutes or so and then trying to start again. The motor will crank in that window, but will cough and sputter, if it runs at all.
When the ignition key is turned to run (before starting engine) a pump noise can be heard from the fuel pump housing. I'm not sure which fuel pump I can hear, but it runs for a short period and stops.
