I did it. I crossed over to the Dark side so long noisy, smokey, problematic OMC you are releaved. Hello sexy new Mercury. I got her mounted and rigged with new everything. I have come across a few quesitons I wanted to ask the Mercury masters before I take it to the dealer. This being my first Merc and the fact that I have never had anything newer than 1984 OMC outboards, I figure there are some common knowlege things I should know.

1st thing I discovered was while running the motor on the water muffs only at idle I did not rev the engine. When you shifted to fwd it would make a clanking noise like my old OMC's would when clutch dog was not engauged completly. I shifted to rev and the noise would go away. This would happen with the shift cable disconnected at the motor and me moving the shift linkage by hand at the motor. I thought this may have something to do with it not having any water resitance on it like it would while underway so I pulled out the ol test tank and tried again. NO noise now even with the controls connected.
Is this normal? What is it doing and why so i can quit thinking about it.

I splashed it Saturday since there didnt seem to be a problem while in the water. The motor ran flawlessl. It was a dream come true....turn the key and bam running like a top. Got to love these FI motors no choke no fussin no cussin just turn the key and go.

I heard the second strange noise while doing the break in. There seems to be no slip while under power everything smooth as butter. But when you let off the throttle abruptly lets say 4500 to 1500. There is a ratcheting sound that continues until the boat slows down. I can only figure this is the prop shaft spinning faster than the drive shaft from the motor. I was not really alarmed becuase the noise only happened when abruptly comming off the throttle and it was the same sound each time. Not s grinding busted gear crunching. It litteraly sounds like a 1/2 ratchet from the tool box with big teeth.

Other than that I couldnt be happier.

Hopfuly what I heard is normal and my thoughts on why it does what it does are correct.

Thanks for the help in advance

Just found som info in the ratchet noise. Got conflicting info though. Everything I have found says the ratchet clutch was used up to 1998. Havent found anything else for current models. Hopfuly someone has more info.

No, that isn't right. Phone the Mercury technical support line. If you get a call centre work out who to call directly. In the UK they are more than helpful.

I assume the gear linkage is set correctly, and it's not partially slipping out/in gear ?
