I'll add my 2016 expenses since that is the year I bought my current boat.
New impeller, impeller housing, motor box gas struts, new exhaust shutters, and all labor - $1,500.
New Ritchie dash compass - old one lost all fluid, $50
four new trailer tires - $800
Fuel: who knows

Waverunner expenses: Fuel - $10,000 or so it seemed.

$0.00

So far, but my boat lives on a trailer and it is still tucked in tight for the winter. :cold:

That hasn't stopped me from spending money on it!
So far I've bought a new impeller and seals for the water pump, four cartridges of 3M 4000 UV caulk and several grades of sand paper; four new portlight gaskets with stainless screens, a tube of bellows adhesive, a bunch of blade fuses, new horn, a big roll of tambour and a can of polyurethane; changed all the incandescent bulbs to LED, a new Ritchie compass, and a new television. A 1000 watt Boat Safe bilge heater, stern tie down straps and safety chains for the trailer.
On tap for this year are: new snap in carpet - $1000.00; a transom mount swim platform from swimplatforms.com - $1500.00; new gasket material for the deck hatches, and a couple new life jackets. I haven't decided yet whether I am going to replace the water heater this season or wait for next winter. At a minimum, I'll probably have to take it apart to assess it's condition.

This is a question that should not be asked, nor answered. Nothing good can come from such a question. Looking over the list of boating expenditures can only lead to depression, denial, rage, alcoholism, divorce, drug abuse, and finally the sale of your boat.

Boating is expensive, and that all that should be said about the subject

I guess the question each of us must ask ourselves is, is the cost of owning and operating a boat worth it. For me the answer is YES.

I've only heard once in my life someone say they can't go out on the boat because they don't have money for fuel. Those are the boats covered in driveways for years and the bigger ones lashed to a dock that only move twice a year, put them in and pull them out.

I resounding YES for me...so much of my summer (vacations, kid's sports, travel, work, etc..) is set aside for the 4+ months of boating!

Well, since our lake house is... on a lake, we kind of need a boat(s). As it turns out, our neighbors next door don't have one and can't really afford one plus the lift and ongoing maintenance quite yet. They are going to be in for a dose of reality when they get one as they have champaigne taste but a beer budget but without any actual cash, they are forced to finance new and nothing but a 22 footer will due apparently. I hope they get one this summer.

It's my hobby. If I viewed it from a cost-benefit perspective I'd have to conclude that I should be committed. The only question I need to ask, is "can I afford to pursue it?" So far, the answer is yes. That's the only reason I even bother to track the major expenses.

Very well said. I don't think a future buyer, if that's why some do the math, will refuse to buy because I don't have receipts for oil. I do track major repairs and luckily I haven't had any that I couldn't do myself.,,,,,,,,yet. All the rest is general maintenance and the everyday cost of boating. I will know when it's not in my "budget". I will eat KD before I stop fishing. You will have to pry my rod from my cold dead hands.

Nothing this year so far.... but usually my costs go like this.
Boat is paid for = $0.
Boat is stored at home = $0.
My insurance = $130 for the year.
Personal property tax(kansas bs) are $85 a year.
Oil change+filter = $50.
Cleaners+wax supplies = $20.
Put about 25 hours on it last year so maybe $300 in fuel (this is a total guess, don't track fuel usage)

I store all the data on my laptop. My admiral does not have access to my laptop or desktop. She has her own computers. I don't look at hers and she does not see mine. Besides I guess I am a lucky guy the wife does not care how much I spend on the boat.
