2019 Grand Cherokee came with wrong size spare....Just found it out

Took me a long time to find this out.
Purchased Jeep new .Never had a flat.Checked that there was a steel wheel spare and jack when new.Everything looked good.
Fit in the well perfectly with the 2 removable triangular storage wells. Black firm foam jack and handle holder fit perfectly. Picked up a new never used matching alloy factory wheel and tire, Goodyear Fortera P245/70R17 at a yard sale. Figured I would swap it out with steel wheel spare.Turns out that the spare that came with the vehicle was the wrong size P245/65R18 110H and a tire brand I have never heard of NYAX (im sure I got the spelling wrong) What the heck could this tire have been for??? Came wrong from the factory I assume. I never thought of looking at the spare tire size....My bad!! Sure glad I never had a flat and depended on using that spare. Scratching my head on this one .Probably is a spare for a different model Grand cherokee..???? Charlie

Triple check your tire sizes
My Ram comes with 20's and spare is 18 inch tire. The circumference of both sizes are within 0.25 inch of each other

245/70R17 is 82.73 inches
245/65R18 is 99 inches

Yep the spare is a totally different tire .I feel like a tool for never thinking of checking but I would have been a bigger tool if I was stuck on the road with a flat and slapped that spare on.THAT would have been a real disaster.Charlie

Looks like their were 3 different tires sizes for the GC that year.

Wife's Caddy had a space save spare so I go out and spend big bucks to get same wheel, tire sensor and tire to only find out when I try to swap out that a full size spare will NOT fit in the same spot

Many vehicles have an odd sized spare. 245 65 18 and 245 70 17 are pretty close in size. I bet the tire is marked temporarily somewhere. It’s extremely common in trucks with 20” tires to have 18” spares

That's in my case it says to put it on the rear only

Get a flat on the front have to change 2 tires to get going.
Guess you could turn off traction control, but either way hope I don't have to use it

Rear tires usually do not turn or sideways scrub and have lighter loads on them. I only buy cars with full sized spares. I also convert the trailer wheel & tire to the same as tow car. Cost extra money. But I have 2 spares and a 18' LONG ratchet and socket that fits both vehicles. Yes I am a worry guy in the boonies at 2 am in the morning. Been there with no cell phone decades ago.

Be hard to put a 6 or 8 lug truck tire on a small trailer

My current daily whip doesn't have a spare....or run-flats

It came with a can of goo and a cheep tire inflation pump

A plug kit and a 2-piston compressor now sit behind the seat

On all our Jeeps and Subarus I always made sure we had a full size spare. Especially the ones with full time 4x4.

This post made me go out to check the spare in my new Mazda.

Being AWD they matched the 30” diameter.
Has 255/50R20 on the rims and a 175/70R20 spare

On any long trip I check the spare air pressure in addition to the others but also bring a plug kit and an electric impact gun…torque wrench…yeah I get funny looks putting that into the back of the Jeep…

My spare was the same size. I've not gotten around to up sizing it to match the tires I have now. Stock mounted was 255 65 r17. Spare 265 70 r16. Close enough. But now I run 265 70 r17. So I'll have to snag a 265 75 r16 for the spare or just get one of the later steel wheels that went to 17" and toss the best tire on that wheel next tire change. Haven't decided yet.

I also keep a patch/plug kit and compressor in the bed. Between that and tools I can do anything on the side of the road that comes up. Coincidentally nothing has come up.

When I wanted to up size the wimpy 245/65-17s on my 07 Grand Cherokee 5.7 I was limited by what the biggest size would be that would fit under the rear storage area. Even going to a 1” taller tire (245/70-17) I still had to trim the back side of the trailer hitch & ends of the bolts to get it to fit. This Jeep has both a full time transfer case & front & rear electronic lockers so the matching spare is a must. Easier on my old ‘98 Grand because the spare just bolts up against the inside interior panel.

When I bought my Cherokee it had a tow package on it, according to the dealer, if the vehicle has a towing pkg it will have a standard size spare like the other tires on the vehicle. My old Blazer had a full size spare as well due to a towing pkg, but my neighbor had the same year and model without the towing pkg and had a donut, no full size spare. Nowadays better check before you buy, consider your self lucky if you even have a spare !!
