20hp Merc slow to start

I recently rebuilt a '98 20 hp Merc which now runs great. Only problem is the initial start. I have to pull start approx. 20 to 30 times to get the thing started. Once it is started it will start on first pull the rest of the day and run strong all day. I have replaced plugs, rebuilt carb and replaced fuel. Any other ideas? I am currently running a little heavy on the oil as It was just rebuilt- will this cause slow start?

Thanks,
BAGMAN-

Re: 20hp Merc slow to start

are you pumping the primer bulb until hard. throttle in fast start position, activating the choke for about 3 pulls, the deactivating the choke. it should start. if not repump, and start over.

That sounds like the ck ball in the primer is sticking or the wrong carb gasket

Thanks Laddie,
I used the same carb gasket when I cleaned so that is probably the problem. M-

While the carb is off, ck the primer to make sure it's working and make sure the gaket holes line up right
