20hp merc tilt vs 20hp tohatsu tilt/20hp yamaha question also

Ok i have been deciding whether to go with a suzuki or a merc 20hp.I think i'm going to go with either the merc/tohatsu.Well i know that the merc has an awesome setup for tilting the outboard that tohatsu doesn't have(ratchet system). My question is what type of tilt system does the 20hp tohatsu actually have because i see on many of the youtube videos the red lever you need to push or pull to tilt it?Also do i always have to move the pin up and down everytime you want to adjust the tilt?On the merc once you get the pin set all you have to move is the engine up and down which makes it so easy to me.I know the motors are identical as far as everything else besides a few features like the shifter on the tohatsu vs the all in handle on the merc and a few other small things.Overall performance is 100%identical.I'm hoping TG or anyone can help me on this.

Now one more question is i have a yamaha dealer i mean walking distance here that i know very well and i love yamaha's as well as mercs and tohatsu's.My question is will the yamaha perform as good as the merc/tohatsu as far as hole shot?I know the yamaha has a i mean a slightly stronger powerhead at 362 cc's compared to 351 cc's but the gear ratio of the yamaha is a 2.08 compared to a 2.15 on the tohatsu/merc so will that give the edge to the tohatsu/merc.I also got quoted a price that was cheaper then the merc and tohatsu which actually amazed me.I just want a 20M no matter what i get.No elec start especially on a yamaha with no pull rope, what a bad flaw if you ask me on elec start models for yamaha in the portable range.I don't get why they would make a portable with no pull rope.Anyhow i was wondering what type of tilt system the yamaha had also is it like the tohatsu or merc?

Thanks for any info.

Tilting any portable engine with rachet system or not is not a strenous issue, engines are very well ballanced and easy to pivot tilt from deck, or from outside. Once yo have set correct trim angle for your application, don't need to move it again, just ballance boat well and that's it. You must always remove the thrust rod when inserting to a different position unless your engine is equipped with a electric tilt system.

Happy Boating

The Yamaha is slower out of the hole and not as fast at WOT with the same pitch prop....Same story with the Yamaha versus Tohatsu 25. I suspect that the Yamaha is probably easier on the fuel bill though. EDIT

PS Whatever you do please do not buy either one from me:)

So basically for the most powerful and best out of the hole 4stroke portable the tohatsu/merc is the way to go.As far as the ratchet system compared to the conventional way i don't agree with they are all hard to tilt because i have tilted a 15hp 4stroke merc with the ratchet system in the water and it's a piece of cake i think even for someone who doesn't have a ton of strength. So i 'm guessing the tohatsu is the conventional move the pin up and down in dif situations?I think to me the merc is the clear winner but just imo. There is a florida sportsman boat show coming as it does every yr at the fairgrounds in march so i will see how the tohatsu tilts as they have just about every portable there for awesome prices. At least i can get a good feel for the outboard.A tohatsu dealer in my area/hudson/port richey is few and far between.I have one in hudson here but he never keeps any tohatsus in stock they are order only.

I wonder why no dealers ever do sea trials with these smaller motors, that would be so nice to do.It's so hard to get the feel of any motor without actually using it at all.

Dealers do not do sea trials as it would increase the cost to you, the consumer.

I like the Mercury system better in that takes less effort to use. The Tohatsu system makes the engine a little lighter and it is less likely to malfunction. So, I would call it a toss up. It's like the shift system difference...You can make a case either way. If both engine's were the same price it would be hard to recommend one over the other. However, with the Tohatsu's now coming with a five year warranty and with them being lower priced...I believe the Tohatsu provides better value.
