I took my old 50hp Johnson out today. The motor hasnt been ran in atleast a year. I filled up my 20litre gas tank and hit the lake, i was gone for about 30mins and found i was out of gas. There are no leaks in the lines. Any ideas on what the problem is here?

depending on the age of that 50 it sounds about right if you kept it at or near WOT.

oh wow really? This Johnson is a 1976. 30minutes doesnt seem like a long time to run on one tank of gas.

on the two cyl version depending on prop, speed and load it sounds a bit much. on the 59 50 I used to ski behind, 6 gallons would not go far :) :)
may be time for a major tune up to include carb rebuilding and fuel pump

your motor should use a smidgen above 5 gallons per hour at WOT, so you should use abut 2.5 or so gallons in 30 mins.

im not sure about the conversion factor, but outboard arent really designed for fuel economy.

If you used 20 liters in 30 minutes, that's about 10 gallons/hr. Wayyyy too much for that motor.

Dunaruna, yea, but I was figuring per/hr., not 1/2 hr.

Start it up and watch for fuel leaks. Do not get nervous and have a cigarette while doing this.

I didn't see your post when I posted. I was replying to 'myoutboards' comment about not being sure of the conversion rate.

No harm, no foul.
