21 foot CC floor replacement

I am starting my floor replacement project tomorrow. I know the floor and stringers are rotted. However, the transom seems to be decent maybe 80 to 90%. I don't like that the motor mounts directly on transom which is lower then the other sides of the boat so in the right wind/wave condition I will get water over the stern. So if I were to replace transom I would like to add a mounting bracket plate and build the transom up higher.

Do you believe I should replace the transom or just leave it be and replace the floor only? I am a novice at this and will be doing it by myself with some coaching from this site. I am somewhat intimidated already but will take it one step at a time.

Thanks for you input.

pictures of you boat would help tremendously. is it self bailing, splash well. transom height now?? where are you going to be boating? long haul for Ocean boating.

as far as replacing transom, that depends on what you find, as you open thing up.

Re: 21 foot CC floor replacement

Well as I am starting this process and I am really in for a bigger job and even bigger mess. The floor spots that are soft are actually horrible. So far I only have a section about 4 feet wide by 1 foot just to see what was going on under there. The Foam was saturated down about 3 inches at least, then dry but still haven't gotten to the bottom, the wood flooring is in between two pieces of fiberglass but was pretty much mush when I tried to pull it out. The floor itself is fiberglass with wood underneath but there is no way to just lift the fiberglass floor off the wood and replace the wood only. So I guess I am just going to have to start fresh. What do you actually put on top of the finished wood floor.

Fiberglass sheets or some sort of covering, I am not using carpet and would rather not have the splattered paint look so what are my options here?

Are there any sites out there that list all the steps involved in replacing a floor. I know there are a lot of posts but it is sometimes difficult to decipher and then search through them all.

Also I will get some pictures when I am able to get home and get my camera. Doing this process at a friends house. He has more tools and a better area to work.

Thanks in advance for any help that is provided.

Re: 21 foot CC floor replacement

Thanks for the links, I will check them out a little later when I can relax a little bit more. I have the floor up and now working on getting all the foam out. Another question, I have a higher portion just in front of the center console. It is a foot higher and filled with foam. It seems to be in good shape and even has a fiberglass top that has space for the wood on top that I have already pulled up. My choices are to

A. Gut out that whole section and try to get it back the same way it is now.

B. Leave it alone and just replace the wood that goes on top of it and finish the lower section which is where the real problems are..

Also, I am not sure where the gasoline is coming from but the foam was saturated in fuel. I checked out the stainless steel fuel tank and it doesn't appear to have any leaks. The only thing I could think is that the overflow valve which alerts when the tank is fuel was that when I was then trailering the swishing around what letting the fuel go onto the floor which then soaked into the floor and foam. Not really but the only thing I could come up with.

overflow/airvent should discharge outside the hull. have the tank pressure tested, and replace all hoses. the forward platform should not have had wood on top of it. sounds like a cheap fix or something else.

I will have the tank checked out.

The wood placement looks like it was designed that way. It was somewhat fiberglassed in and there is a big lip if the wood isn't in its place. So I am not sure.

By the way it is a 1974 Hallmark boat.

Re: 21 foot CC floor replacement

I won't be able to post some pictures for at least a few days. Don't have the camera now and have to go to work for the next three but after that I will be workin on this thing till it is done. What a pain but I know I will appreciate it when I am done.

Thanks again for your replys.
