Black oil just means it hasn't been changed in a long time. Not necessarily cause for much concern like milkshake looking oil would. I'd probably just do the next change a little earlier to get it cleaned out. That's good news. Those U-joints look fine to me.

U-joints look fine, just some surface rust. There is a grease point so greasing them when they move freely.

Hi GSpec,
As someone else said..nice boat. Such a really nice flow to it. Mine's a SR 180 and did full refurb last year with upholstery and carpet to finish off this year. It's a similar shape to yours, but the length on yours just makes it look so nice. I had to swap out my 4.3 V6, rebuild entirely the gimble and some work on the Alpha outdrive. So buying replacement parts was a big chunk of my time. I built up a good list of online companies who have really good prices on both OEM and replacement parts. If you need that list, just PM me.

subscribed. Beautiful boat, love the lines of the old Sea Rays. Starting to look like you got a damn good deal, have you checked the boat for rot yet?

yikes, the dreaded double deck. Time to get some core samples of the stringers and transom.

Gspec,
Here was my thread: http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...-180-transom-replacement-question-534977.html. That said I never di finish posting the pics. That was because half the time I was so knackered after a full days resto work I forgot to get the camera and take some pics. I'll try and take some pics of it now. It still needs the upholstery side panels renewing and all the seat cushions as well as fresh carpet. For the inside I simply used Rustoleum Marine Blue over the fiberglass and it looks good and keeps me happy till I can afford carpet.

Understandable, but it won't cost you anything to pull the deck and see how bad it is.

GSpec,
Sorry to hear about the double deck, but before you go looking for a sharp razor blade, ask yourself...does the floor feel soft at all? If it does, then you should delve deeper, but if it feels OK, then do what you said you were going to do...that is enjoy it this summer. When that's over, you can review the boat and decide whether you want to resto it over the off season or simply sell it on. Boat ownership should be about enjoying the things not constantly having a wrench or fiberglass in your hands. There are many out there who believe boat ownership is about tinkering, the same as car guys who enjoy nothing better than grease on their hands and up to their eyes in engine parts. Boats and Cars are for enjoying.

A Ford Focus might have fit the bill and left you with some options on the boating front :D
