I'm looking at purchasing a 2157 Carver Montego on a dual axle trailer with surge brakes. Does anyone know about how much one of these behemoth of a 21ft boat weights on the trailer and will my 93 Chevy 4x4 suburban (with full towing package including trans cooler) pull this boat? Any help would be appreciated!

Re: 2157 Carver Trailer questions

A light dual-axle trailer weighs 1000 lbs.

The boat is probably around 3000-3500.

Can't imagine your Suburban isn't at least rated for 6,000 lbs.

Edit: Standard towing on a 1993 is 6000-7,000 lbs (axle ratio varies). You could haul any standard runabout up to about 24' with that, which leaves room in the specs for people and gear.

Enjoy.

21 footer on a dual axle should be in the neighborhood of 4500-5000lbs. 5500lb at the outside. You shouldn't have any problem at all with the Suburban. It's rated for 6500lbs.

Re: 2157 Carver Trailer questions

well the reason I ask is that this is a 2157 montego and it is a huge 21ft boat carver claims 3900lbs dry weight. The gentlemen who owns it thinks that it is 7400lbs on the trailer, the trailer is an aluminum trailer made by local trailer manufacturer tennessee trailers. I don't have to go up or down any mountains and I know the low range will get me up any boat ramp but I want to make sure this is do able.

You guys think even with a boat that heavy I'll be okay? I just wish somewhere I could find the weight of the boat so I'd know.

Hey... I looked at your sig pic and estimated off that. A pocket cruiser is a different animal.

According to iboats, it's a 4000 lb boat dry. So, with fuel and gear, it's a 5000 lb boat on a 1200-1300 lb trailer. Now you need to find out more about your tow vehicle's axle ratio.

When towing, everything above 1 person in the tow vehicle cuts down the tow capacity, so a 150 lbs passenger knocks 150 off the tow limit.

Ok, here's a pic of a 1989. That is a hefty looking boat for a 21 footer. Back then I bet they measured from transom to bow and didn't include the pulpit and swim platform. So it's really more like a 24 footer which would put it in the 7000+ lb range. You're probably going to need a 3/4 ton instead of the 1/2 ton to tow it.

Sorry about that, I should have looked first.

Re: 2157 Carver Trailer questions

But is it a 1500 or 2500. Here are the specs from Trailer Boats.

1993 Chevrolet/GMC Suburban K1500 (4WD) 5.7 V-8 6500lb
Requires 3.73:1 axle ratio.
Requires Z82 Trailering Special Package.
Requires automatic transmission.
Requires engine-oil cooler.
Requires transmission-oil cooler.
Towing not recommended with GMC Typhoon.

1993 Chevrolet/GMC Suburban K2500 (4WD) 7.4 V-8 10000lb
Requires Z82 Trailering Special Package.
Requires automatic transmission.
Requires engine-oil cooler.
Requires transmission-oil cooler.
Requires weight-distributing hitch.
Requires 4.10:1 axle ratio.
Towing not recommended with GMC Typhoon.

Edit: Nevermind, you said 5.7l and 3.73 gears so you have the 1/2 ton.

So do you think the 1500 will pull it? My buddy who runs a transport business towing with pickup trucks says it will as long as the surge brakes on the trailer are good. What if I get a weight distribution hitch. This boat is beautiful I want it soooooooo bad. Also there are no huge hills for me to go up and down and I would say the furthest boat ramp I'll use is 20 miles round trip.

Re: 2157 Carver Trailer questions

I'll catch heat for this, but I would go for it. I can't see that rig weighing the 7000+lbs the previous owner stated. It's a good sized 21, but even then a half ton should haul it without too much struggle. Good brakes on the trailer are a must no matter the vehicle.

My cousin towed his 22' express style boat with a 1500 Ram with no troubles.

I guess it just seams over kill to need a 3/4 ton truck for a 21' boat, even a 24' boat, as some say it may be closer to.

Re: 2157 Carver Trailer questions

That's what I needed to hear. After contacting the previous owner despite him now having a 3/4 ton he orignally towed it with a gen 1 Tahoe. Plus if worst come to worst I'm a mechanic we'll just put a bigger rear end a a 4L80 in the burb and keep trucking. Thanks guys for reminding me why this is the best boating forum on the web...such quick responses!

Re: 2157 Carver Trailer questions

Come to think of it, my old 27' express cruisers sitting on a home made steel trailer was towed by a mid 90s Chevy 1500 before I got it. That was a lot heavier set up.

Sorry, there's no way that 21' boat weighs even 6K lbs w/gear, etc. You'll be fine with the 1/2 ton suburban.

Re: 2157 Carver Trailer questions

I own the exact same boat albeit a year newer. Loaded ready to go with trailer it's about 6200-6400lbs. I tow it with a 2003 avalanche with a5.3 and 3:52 gears pretty much no problem at average altitude of 5000-7500 ft. It's no rocket but rarely drops below 55 mph on 6% grades. Your Burban will be just fine. Best upgrade I did was Kodiak disc brakes and went with Maxxis radials. I use an equalizer hitch also. Great boat, had mine for 11 years now. I've also towed it with a 4.8 chev silverado with little trouble. Don't sweat it, you've got the wheelbase with the Burban that makes all the difference in the world.
