21'stamas adjusting new shifter cable

I just changed the shifter cable i set it up like the old one. Well couldn't get into reverse and triggered shut off I read the manual but still not sure if I have the cable adjusted on the transom plate. I have a mercruiser outboard and 6 cyclinder inboard

You're in the wrong section again. You should be in the MerCruiser Sterndrive forum. One of the moderators will probably combine the two threads and move them.

If you disconnect the lower cable at the transom can you shift the drive all the way into both gears by pushing or pulling on the cable?

Yes I had it working forward and reverse but the barrel was hitting the other cables nut so I took it apart again and flipped the barrel. But now it doesn't get back to reverse. I think I need to get one cable adjusted properly. I don't understand the 5 7/8 " from were to where I think that's my starting point

I think I gave you this before, but go to http://boatinfo.no/lib/mercruiser/manuals/mercruiser1.html#/92 On the right hand side of page 92 there is a real good picture of measuring the 5 7/8". Don't forget to rotate the prop so that it goes all the way into gear before taking the measurement.
