Buyingpontoon and plan to use it on Mississippi. Wondering how the 60 hp bigfoot (2009) will work. The boat is a 2009 22ft Premier set up for fishing and set up with the bifoot..Just a little worried it will not be big enough

Welcome,
The 60 should produce speeds around 20 mph.Let us know how it behaves,we may be able to help with any problems.

I have a 60 Bigfoot on my 20'. Wide open is about 20 mph with 2 souls aboard. The 4 stroke is quiet and really good on fuel. For me a 90 would be ideal but it would only increase the speed by 4-5 mph.

Welcome aboard. Generally speaking a 60 horse bigfoot should push that barge along just fine, even upstream if the current's not dangerously strong. You won't be setting any speed records, but that's not what pontoon boats are for any way. However, the mighty Mississip is a long river, and since you didn't put your location in your signature we don't know what part of her you'll be navigating. If we're talking about the Memphis pool then I'd say neither that barge nor that motor would be adequate. If we're talking about the midwest I'd say I have no idea because I've never been there. You get the point though. Whether you'll have enough motor for the Mississippi depends on what part of the Mississippi you mean. Happy tooning.

The nice thing about the bigger motor is not so much the speed but the ability cruise at about
the 60s top speed and the motor will be loafing not blowing its guts out trying to make speed.
If you choose to run at a the 60s cruising speed so much the better.

Steelespike has the right idea...You will be pushing that 60gh.p. real hard...I wouldn't have less than a 90h.p. I have the 32ft Tracker with a 115 four stroke and it works real hard.. Ideally should have ordered the 150 Optimax. Again less wear from not having to push the engine so hard...The 60h.p. Bigfoot is a great motor and will work so not putting it down..Just would prefer the 90h.p.

Which part of the Mississippi?

How many people?

How much gear do you plan on taking?

Do you need to run fast or are you happy with cruising speeds?

I have a 75 hp four stroke on a 22'. I have a 14x11p prop and my WOT speed is around 22mph.
With mine I would say 15 mph is a good cruising speed.

I would say the 60HP motor would be close to the same cruising speed as long as you have a light load.
