22' SS Repower question

All,

First off - great forum here with lots of ideas.

My question is this. I have a 22' SS open bow with a frozen 470 in it and I have purchased a inline 6 that runs great to put in it. Will the outdrive that is with the 470 work with the inline 6?

Hi yes, the 470 drive will work, it should be 170hp which is only 5hp more than the 165 inline 6 250ci, which is what is used, it should be a 1.65:1 Ratio, should be stamped on the port side of the upper section. Though I'm not sure they share the same transom plate width, you may want to check that. What condition is the front mount wood in ? you may have to move it forward, I can help with the design if needed. My original peice was made from 2 3/4" plywood peices, but my replacement is a 2x6.
The HP of the 470 vs the inline 6 isn't important just the ratio.

When you say the ratio will be on the upper port side - is this on the outdrive itself or where?

Also, what is the ratio of the 470 vs the inline 6?

Yes the ratio is typically stamped into a decal on the left upper side of the outdrive. the inline 6 uses a 1.65:1 Ratio and I just checked, the 470 uses a 1.84:1 Ratio, which means instead of a 19P prop, run a 21P prop
You should look for a serial number on the drive, hopefully it's still there, if not you can take the top cover off and count the teeth. 24/24 is 1.65r, I'm not sure what 1.84r is without looking at a manual

I used a 1.98r drive from a 4cyl 120/140hp on mine, I went from a 19p prop to a 23p prop. check the graphic I attached to see how prop pitch and gear ratios effect speed.
