225 efi 4 stoke 2006 vst pump problem

First I have a qustion. I know the 2006 merc 225 efi 4 stroke is a yammie but does any one know about the issues on the VST (Vapor Seperator Tank). Been helping my friend with his. First question is on the high pressure fuel pump is the piece on the bottom a filter that comes off it is peaned over the plastic seems like most of these have a filter on the bottom. This motor will not stay running I saw that the return hose on the vst was not pumping but there was fuel in the vst. this motor has low hrs and is a strong runner. I took off the vst and cleaned the screen and the clogged return hose valve. 2 Do you think the fuel pump burned out or the filters were just dirty?
