225 johnson shuts down

1993 johnson 225 venom runs great untill it just shutsdown as if the key was turned off.Then it will start back and run fine untill next time.Always happens above 4000rpm.Compression is good on all cylinders.New spark plugs,the correct ones. New water pump last summer.New power pact back in oct.2002 istalled by dealer.NO skipping or miss firing before shut down.ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I had a similar problem with an 86 model Evinrude 150. Turned out to be the ignition switch had gone bad and was cutting the engine out. I was offered the suggestions of the stator, timing base or a bad power back. Do all cylinders fire at idle speed? Mine was jumping back and forth from 246 and 135. Just some suggestions and i hope if works out!<br />oshi

unless i use the choke to try and keep it running during shut down, yes.It seems like it would idle all day. Thanks for the help, i will check the switch first thing in a.m.

If ya gotta choke it to keep it running, you've got fuel problems. Tank vent, sucking air in somewhere, fuel pump, anti-syphon valve, etc.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty

Sounds like your water/fuel filter has a lot of water in it or a bad check valve, check and try a new filter.

Choking it doesn't keep it running. All that seems to do is foul plugs.When it shuts down it shuts down.I tried choking, hoping it was fuel problem. Much easier to troubleshoot.Looking like maybe electrical.What do you think?

replaced primer bulb and fuel filter. Is the check valve on the motor or tank?

What do you have to do to restart it? Will it restart by just turning the key or do you have to squeeze the primer bulb to put fuel into it? Is your warning horn working? This motor should have a fuel vacuum switch on it that sounds the warning horn telling you if you have a fuel restriction problem. If it's an air leak, you'd have to pump the primer bulb to fill it with fuel, before restarting. If it's electrical, you can isolate the engine from the controls. To see if it's in the engine or controls, you could start the motor, disconnect the main wiring at the large red connector, (at the motor) and run the motor. If it shuts down, with this connector apart, the problem is in the motor. If it keeps running, it's in the control area, Just remember that with the red connector apart, you will not be able to shut off or restart the motor, at the controls.

Thanks ICEMAN. It will start back up no problem.The bulb is not firm but not flat either.Idon't have to pump the bulb to start the motor.I will try your suggestion about starting the engine then unplugging red connector.Have not done a check on warning horn but each time i turn the key to start the horn beeps one time.By controls do you mean ignition switch,kill switch, and shifter? Cold and rainy down here in Jawja.

If all 6 cylinders stop firing at once, could be power pack or black/yellow shorting to ground.

New power pack installed by omc mechanic oct. 02.Could the new one have gone bad so soon? Maybe 5 hrs. on new pack. Did have the same symptons thogh.I will check black &yellow wire,Thanks.
